A/N: This is kind of a P&P and King's Speech crossover. But not really. Because I've never watched The King's Speech, so…
And because I did zero research for this, I'm just going to have to say that all characters are completely made up, and they are not based on anyone living OR dead. Also, parts of the proposal are from Jane Austen and the BBC adaptation of P&P.
"B- b- b- but you can't do this! I just can't take the throne!" cried Fitzwilliam Darcy, second son to the late King George IV.
"Fitz, you know I want to marry Anne, and the only way for me to do that is to step down. I'll cause a bloody conflict otherwise," replied Simon, the 1st son of King George.
"M- m- m- my stuttering, though," said Darcy.
"You've got that speech therapist, though… Right?"
"We had a s- sort of quarrel," replied Darcy.
"Well you'd better snap out of it, because I'm off to America in 10 days. And by that time, you need to take the throne," Simon said, and with a definitive nod, left the room to leave William to his thoughts.
William felt sick. How could he ever do it? It was not 5 days since one Miss Elizabeth Bennet had rejected his suit. With her, his stuttering might have disappeared, just like all bad things did when he saw her smile. He closed his eyes and allowed himself to imagine her.
[flashback]
Elizabeth was sitting in a chair, looking decidedly uncomfortable. He was pacing the floor, trying to decide how to get it out without stuttering. He remembered what made him speak normally- anger. So he focused on how upset he had been with Mrs. Bennet about talking about his good friend Charles Bingley's fortune, and how she talked about him like a piece of horseflesh on the market. Then, he began:
"In vain have I struggled, and I can bear it no longer. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you. In doing this, I understand the great consequences that this has on my standing, and this may be frowned upon, as I am, of course, the Duke of -. Your family is a disgrace and your social standing could be called disgusting"
Elizabeth was silent. Darcy fidgeted with his hands nervously. Then she began:
"I believe, in such cases as these, it is proper to express a feeling of obligation, however, I do not. I have never desired your good opinion. How could I, when you have just insulted me in every way possible? I take my leave of this place." She made a sharp turn and headed out of the room.
Darcy collapsed into a chair. Sure, he had completed his task without stuttering, but he had done so in a way that had ruined every prospect of his future happiness. He must expla-
"A message for you, sir. From your brother." A butler startled Darcy out of his reverie.
"Blast! What does he want now?" asked Darcy.
A/N: Probably not in the style of the movie, but that's the best I can do… Suggestions? Should I continue?
