I was raised in exactly the same way as my sister, but somehow, just carrying the Hale name wasn't enough for my parents. I lived in the shadow of my perfect older sister, Rosalie. Rose was the my parents' pride and joy, while I was the other one, never able to measure up to Rosalie's flawlessness. I wasn't blonde-haired and blue-eyed perfection like she was. I had thick, dark, nearly unmanageable curls and eyes to match my hair. I was inferior to Rosalie in that way.

My sister was engaged to be married to Royce King, Jr. He was, like Rosalie, blonde and blue-eyed, and filthy rich. His name screamed rich kid. My parents were thrilled that Rose was getting married, and they helped Rosalie and Royce prepare their wedding. It was going to be the grandest wedding Rochester had ever seen, my mother assured me. I heard them talking, and I stopped outside the door to listen.

"Should her train be long or short?" my father asked. I could picture Rosalie grimacing; she hated people talking about her like she wasn't there.

"Long, definitely," my mother decided. "With lots of tulle."

"Um, is there any way we could resume this conversation at another time?" Rosalie asked formally (pleasing our parents, probably) in her clear, attractive voice. "I promised Vera I'd meet her at six o'clock."

"Yes, I also have to meet a few friends," Royce agreed.

"Certainly," Mother said. "Same time tomorrow then?"

"Absolutely, Mr. and Mrs. Hale," Royce told them respectfully. I could hear footsteps nearing the door, and I quickly darted to my room, pretending to be wrapped up, once again, in Wuthering Heights. Rosalie passed my room, and I dramatically turned the page.

"Hello, Julienne," she said to me cheerfully.

"Hello, Rose," I replied, not looking up.

"Wuthering Heights again? Don't you have that memorized?" Rosalie asked.

"Not yet," I told her with a little grin, looking up at her perfect face.

"I'm going to meet Vera and her son..." Rosalie trailed off, and her voice held a hint of wistfulness in it. "I'll be home soon."

Rosalie never came home. Her body was never found, and she was presumed dead. The town of Rochester was devastated by the loss of one-half of their favorite couple to gossip about. Then, a few weeks later, the bodies of Royce and four of his friends were uncovered. All five bodies had the same bite marks in the neck, and evidence of crushing blows. The death of Royce was another fatal blow to the town's morale.

And after Rosalie's death, my parents could only see Rosalie every time they looked at me. They hated me for that.
