Marius was concerned. He hasn't seen Éponine for 3 days. He wanted to search her, but Enjolras didn't give free time for him. Because of the revolution, and because of Cosette. Since Cosette moved , Marius was very sad and depressed. His friends were worried about him, especially Enjolras. The leader entrusted lots of work to Marius. He wanted that his best friend doesn't think to Cosette. Enjolras was afraid that Marius will do something nonsense with himself. So he confiscated Marius's gun and knife.
" Life without Cosette ,means nothing at all. Would you weep, Cosette, if I were to fall? - thought Marius
- Marius! Hey, are you here, mate? - asked Grantaire. Oh Gosh. There will be a homily soon.
- Of course. I am just a bit tired. That's all. - Marius tried to smile, but it was just a really tired grimace.
- Then you should sleep. - said Joly.- Or just a little nap, or a rest.
- Believe me, Joly, I want to sleep. - Marius sighed- I want to sleep very deeply .
Enjolras heard the words of his friend. He felt that Marius is sad again. Enjolras went and sat next to Marius. He put his hand to Marius's shoulder, and smiled.
- How are you, brother? - asked Enjolras. The smile, what Marius gave to Enjolras, was a really smile.
- He is tired. - smiled Grantaire. - He should to drink some wine. Oops.. - He picked up the empty bottle- So... hih...
- Take it easy, Taire! - said Enjolras. The man smiled to Enjolras. His words were commands for Grantaire. - You didn't give me an answer, Marius.
- Did you give me a question? - said Marius quietly with a huge sigh. He put his head to the table.
- Are you okay? - Enjolras worried.
- I am just a little weak . - said Marius. His head was still on the table. - I haven't eat today.
- You have to eat something. - said Enjolras firmly. - Joly! Get a ham for Marius!
- No... it isn't necessary. - Marius stood up as Enjolras . - I have to go .
- Yes? Where do you want to go? - Enjolras felt that Marius want to escape from him.
- I have to see Éponine. - It was true. He really want to see her.
- Okay. - said Enjolras. - I go with you.
- It isn't necessary. - Marius love Enjolras, but he hate, when Enjolras treat him like a child.
- Look , Marius! I confess that I don't trust you. Since Cosette left you, you are like a sulky child. I know, it is hurt to you, but you have to stand up! You can't kill yourself Marius, you just can't! Stop the self-pity! This country is full of the beautifull women. Lets choose an other woman and your life will happy again!
Marius looked his friend. He didn't understand what Enjolras said. " Kill yourself... self-pity... other woman...Cosette. "
- Other woman? - asked weakly - There isn't an other woman! There won't be an other woman! - he shouted. - Cosette was the first and the last woman in my life! I just .. I just want to forget everything! I want to forget my age, my family, my feelings, my life. This is the death, isn't it? - Marius looked at his best friend's eyes, and suddenly ran away. Marius can't see that Enjolras ran after him.
Marius ran to a remote alley. He sat down to small stone, and cried. He wanted to die into his feelings. Suddenly he heard a man shouting.
-... you worthless!
- No, please, Dad! I can't hurt Marius, he is my best friend! - Éponine! Marius ran after the voices. He saw Ponine as his father beating her.
- Stop, Thénardier! What the hell are you doing with Éponine ? You are her dad, fool! - shouted Marius.
- Get away, Pontmercy! - the man shouted back . - Don't want to tell me that how I should educate my daughter!
- Marius, please, go away. - sobbed Éponine. - I deserve it, Marius! Please!
Marius looked them. Every beat hurt him. He have to stop Ténardier! Éponine was his best friend beside Enjolras. Marius ran to Thénardier. They started to fighting. Éponine sobbed on the grass. The man grabbed a big stone, and throwed it to Marius's head. The boy started to feel a very big pain. A second darkness, and everything came to light again. Marius started to dizzy. He took a big, deep breathe. Marius kicked Thénardier on his stomach, and the man fainted. Éponine stood up, and ran to hug Marius.
- Come, Ponine, we have to go!
- Marius, your head is bleeding! Are you okay? - Éponine sobbed again.
- Ssss , little Ponine, calm down! I feel okay.. just a bit dizzy. Come, I'll take you to my home.
Éponine nodded, and give a kiss to Marius's face. They start to go to Marius's flat. After 20 minutes, Marius started to feel sick again. He leaned on a wall. He felt Éponine's hand on his back.
- Marius, please. What is the problem? - Marius didn't give an answer. He felt that he fall to the ground. Éponine screamed, shouted. Marius felt as the blood flowing out of his head.
- É...Éponine... don't shout, please.- begged Marius. - I'll die.
- No! - Éponine cried- Marius please! I love you, Marius, please! I am in love with you! Please don't leave me!
Marius looked at Éponine. Love ? She is in love with him? Marius smiled. He thought of Cosette , his friends, Éponine, his grandpa, Cosette... And all went black.
