An Interesting Use for a Scarf

Merlin and Gaius started as Arthur burst into the chambers they shared.

"Merlin" Arthur exclaimed. "I need something that… something to… I need…," he fumbled with his words, his eyes desperately searching the room for something.

Arthur's gaze fell on Merlin's neck and his face lit up in excitement.

"That!" he shouted triumphantly, vigorously pointing. "I need that!"

"My scarf?" Merlin asked, utterly confused. "But why-"

"Never you mind," Arthur cut him off. Just hand it over!"

Merlin exchanged a look with Gaius, but the latter simply shrugged at him and went on with his work. Still looking at Arthur quizzically, absently wondering if the Prince may have gone mad, Merlin took off his neckerchief and handed it over.

"This will show Gwaine!" he said secretively to himself and hurried from the room.

Merlin stared at the door Arthur had walked through for a few moments. "I'm going to go find out what that was all about," Merlin told Gaius.

Merlin followed Arthur to the practice yards where he picked up something Merlin hadn't seen, then to a small pond.

Arthur fitted Merlin's scarf onto the scrap of wood he'd picked up and Merlin looked around to see Gwaine handling a similar device.

"Now we shall see who can build the better boat!" Arthur announced.

Merlin rolled his eyes as Gwaine responded with a sarcastic taunt, and the two boys, for in this instance there was no other word to describe them, placed their vessels in the pond.
