Christmas time had always been a special time for Gwen when she was younger, it was not about gifts but about time spent with her dad. He used to tell her such wonderful fairytales and laughter used to fill her house. At this thought she sighed.
She had to admit she didn't know what she was doing here anymore, with her father gone and now Morgana she felt alone now. She made her way to the castle it was freezing cold outside and Gwen wrapped her thin cloak closer to herself to try and keep warm.
The castle had was a hive of activity in preparation for the Christmas feast, Gwen had been running around all day helping to set up, she was exhausted. She was on her way to the kitchen when she ran straight into Merlin.
"Gwen" he said with a big smile and picked her up in a hug.
"Happy Christmas" he said smiling.
"Happy Christmas Merlin" she said.
"Are you coming to Gauis's for dinner after this feast?" he said and let her out of the hug.
"Its a lovely offer Merlin but I am exhausted was thinking of an early night" she said honestly.
"Well if you change your mind, you know where we are" he said smiling.
"Thank you Merlin" she said smiling.
It sounded like a lovely idea but she was so tired.
The feast went off to full swing there was, as usual enough food to feed the whole of Camelot for a week and then the dancing and the drink. She watched Arthur laughing with the knights and smiled, at least he was having fun she thought, she loved seeing him smile.
She carried on filling up glass after glass of wine, she was getting so hot she thought she would explode. So she left to get some fresh air, she walked up to the top of the west tower and onto the balcony. She loved this place when she needed to think.
The air was cold, she wrapped her arms around herself and looked out over Camelot. It was beautiful it was snowing and just starting to cover all the roof tops, the music was playing from the great hall, she sighed.
She felt a thick cloak go over her shoulders and a big pair of hands wrap around her waist, she didn't need to turn to see who it was, she could tell by her heart going faster that Arthur was keeping her warm. She leaned back into his chest and sighed. She could feel his heart beating fast, he was so calming to her he always made her feel safe.
"Its beautiful isn't it" she said quietly.
"Yes" he said looking down at her.
A comfortable silence passed between them before Arthur spoke.
"Do you know what I see when I look down there tonight?" he said gesturing to the square.
"No what" she said looking down.
"I see our children playing in the snow" he said.
She smiled at this and closed her eyes to see it. "How many?" she said.
"Two, a little boy that looks like me and a beautiful little girl that has curly brown hair and brown eyes" he said sighing.
She smiled so wide, what a beautiful fairytale.
"And we are there of course" he said softly in her ear.
"What are we doing?" she said.
"Kissing, always kissing" as he whispered in her ear a shiver ran down her spine.
"Sounds like a perfect fairytale" she said still with her eyes closed.
"Not a fairytale a glimpse of our future" he said kissing her on the head.
Gwen didn't want to talk sensible anymore, this dream was perfect and she did not want to break this moment with reality.
"I hope so" she said softly opening her eyes.
He turned her round to face him keeping her in his arms. She looked up at him and he was smiling.
"I know so Guinevere" he brushed a curl away from her face.
She stood on her toes and kissed him gently, he responded straight away and dipped her slightly putting his hands through her hair. When they broke for air and she opened her eyes, he was smiling at her.
"Happy Christmas Guinevere" he said pulling her up straight.
"Happy Christmas Arthur" she said and he smiled even wider.
And he held onto her keeping her warm. Maybe not such a bad day after all Gwen thought.
