A/N: This was written for a challenge on another site and had to be under 200 words. The prompt word was "tears". My first attempt at writing any LOTR fic. Please enjoy.

I wish I could not cry. That the tears would cease to flow every time my father looks at me, berates me with his eyes for not being stronger, not being smarter…not being Boromir.

It was easier – and better – when I was younger. When hitting and outright scolding not longer yielded the tears he longed for, he sought out new ways to bring the tears to my eyes. Silence and allusions are his weapons of choice and he utilizes them well.

I back out of his presence. I do not trust taking my eyes off him. As long as I maintain eye contact, I will not cry. I will swallow the tears; I will choke and gag before I will let them fall in his presence one final time. He has sentenced me to death – coldly, calculatingly – for he knows that is all that awaits me with orders to re-take Osgiliath. For not being my brother, I will join my brother. I wonder emptily if anyone will shed tears for me…
