Rounding the corner into the E.D car park Cal and Jacob stopped in their tracks, far in the distance they saw her. Dressed in all black biker leathers was their mystery woman, she swung her leg over and dismounted the classic Triumph.
"Wow!" Said Cal in awe.
"Yep." Agreed Jacob.
For weeks now they had been trying to catch a glimpse of the woman who's identity always managed to elude them.
They waited with baited breaths to see if she would show her face, but just the same as every other day, she disappeared into the E.D still wearing the blacked out helmet.
"I don't get it, how hard could it be to find out who rides that bike!" Exclaimed Cal with frustration.
"I feel like we've made a right meal out of it...detectives we are not!" Said Jacob shaking his head.
Approaching the bike Cal gave Jacob a grin that had mischief written all over it. "Mate?" Questioned Jacob. "What you thinking?"
"Why don't we just ask?" Said Cal simply.
"I'm not following." Frowned Jacob.
"Wait here." Instructed Cal as he jogged into the emergency department and returned moments later with a pen and paper.
Jacob smirked as he read the note Cal taped to the large front headlamp.
"Call me"
"Mate, that's never going to work!" Laughed Jacob.
"We'll see." Said Cal full of confidence jotting down his phone number before heading back into the E.D to start his shift.
Hours later as another hectic day came to a close, the mystery woman saunted into view. "Cal!" Hissed Jacob to get his attention and pointed across reception at the leather clad beauty heading for the exit.
Rushing to catch her up the obsessed duo craned their necks around the door and watched as she read the note. Cal became hopeful when she started walking back towards them, note in hand.
His hope though was short lived, his direct no frills note was crumpled up and deposited in the bin.
"Hard look mate." Said Jacob patting Cal's back sympathetically.
"Good things come to those who wait!" He replied undeterred.
A week had passed since the last appearance of the mystery woman and Cal was convinced that now the whether had improved, today would be the day!
"Bikers can't resist Jacob!" Said Cal rubbing his hands together. "A nice sunny day like today...it's like catnip to them!"
"Well I wish I had your confidence...how do you know she even works here...she could be visiting someone up on the ward!" Suggested Jacob.
Cal shuck his head in disappointment. "You need to be more observant...have you ever seen her buy a parking ticket!"
"Good point...hey...hey look!" Said Jacob nodding. They watched with excitement as the object of their affections walked into the hospital, through reception and into the ladies changing rooms.
"I told you! Didn't I tell you!" Gloated Cal. "We've got her now..."
"Come on mate...you can't stake out the ladies changing room...that's just weird!" Jacob told him.
"Who can't!" Said Cal in disbelief.
In the ten minutes Cal and Jacob hovered waiting, Robyn, Alicia and louise had left the room, finally Connie emerged. "Mrs Beauchamp, is there anyone left in there?" Asked Cal trying to sneak a peek around the door.
"Excuse me?" Asked Connie stunned.
"I'm looking for a woman-" "Oh...wow...I think you've hit an all time low Dr Knight." Said Connie in disgust as she walked off.
"Hey sweet cheeks..." said Jacob following the clinical lead into her office.
"Its Mrs Beauchamp, Jacob!" She told him, not quite keeping the stern look on her face.
"So what's he really up to?" Asked Connie gesturing in the general direction of the changing room.
"There's this woman that turns up every now and again on a motorbike...a very nice one at that...anyway, Cal's determined to find out who it is...and I will admit, I'm slightly curious to." Explained Jacob. "I don't suppose you have any idea do you?"
Connie smirked and shuck her head. "Sorry."
"So..." Said Jacob hovering round her door. "I'm free tonight if there's anything you want to ask me." He sent Connie a cheeky smile. "See, because I don't ask twice the balls in your court Queen Bee."
"Persistent aren't you Staff Nurse Masters...there is something I want to ask you actually..." said Connie sweetly.
"Oh?" Jacob raised an eyebrow expectantly.
Her expression turned serious as she asked. "Are you planning on getting any work done today?"
Jacob grinned unfazed as he left.
"This is getting ridiculous!" Said Cal with a sigh as he and Jacob watched over the ladies changing room for the third day in a row. "I think I might just give up!"
"I never thought I'd see the day." Chuckled Jacob. "Come on, I've got an idea."
"Really?" Asked Cal.
"Yep...hey...Louise!" Shouted Jacob.
"What do you two want?" She asked as the two men approached her and Robyn.
"The other day when you used the ladies changing room, you didn't happen to notice a woman walk in there wearing biker leathers, did you?" Wondered Jacob.
"Erm...no can't say I did...why?" She quizzed.
Jacob sighed. "Just curious as to who it is that's all...could you keep an eye out for us?"
"Sure." Said Louise with an exaggerated smile as the boys walked off with sagging shoulders.
"Errr...why didn't you just tell them?" Robyn asked, a confused look on her face.
"I've got to get my kicks somewhere..." Said Louise in all seriousness. "...I've been watching them pair of clowns acting like Miss Marple for two months now...I'm convinced they'll never work it out!"
"Mrs Beauchamp-" "No Dr Knight...there's no one in there, now get on with your work!" Barked Connie as she left the changing room.
Cal looked to Jacob. "Well Alicia was the only other person to come out of there..."
"Its not her...I saw her arrive on the bus first thing...what about Mrs Beauchamp?" Suggested Jacob.
"Oh behave man! She's just walked out of there looking immaculate as always...not a hair out of place...there's no way she's just took a helmet off...we must have missed someone while we were talking to Louise." Said Cal looking deflated.
"Thought about where your going to take me yet, sweet cheeks?" Asked Jacob letting himself into Connie's office.
"Do you know how to knock?" She snapped.
Jacob caught her off guard with his next question. "How did you get to work this morning?"
Connie looked up and caught sight of Jacob's smug expression. "I didn't, I finished late last night...I stayed in the on call room..." Answered Connie smoothly. "That's why I was using the changing rooms...guess again Staff Nurse Masters!" She smiled.
Another week passed and Cal and Jacob had all but given up on their mystery woman. "RTC in two minutes guys!" Shouted Rita calling them into resus.
Paramedics wheeled in a man writhing in agony as blood poured from his leg, Jacob was the first to react. He took over holding down on the wound to slow down the blood loss, looking at Cal for instructions Jacob could tell he was distracted.
"Cal!" Shouted Jacob as he turned to see what had him so distracted.
There she was their mystery woman walking through the swinging double doors of resus unclipping the chin strap under her blacked out helmet. This was it, the moment both men had waited for and it all happened in slow motion.
Easing the helmet off the brunette shuck out her long wavy locks and Jacob gulped. "Wow." He murmured.
"Dr Knight! Your patient needs treating before he bleeds to death!" Ordered Connie.
"But...but...it's...you...it's you!" Stammered Cal.
"Cal, mate!" Urged Jacob trying to get his friends attention. "CAL!"
"But it's her!" Was all he could say as he pointed.
"DR KNIGHT!" Shouted Connie. "Now is not the time for your silly games!"
"Come on Cal!" Tried Jacob again as he watched is friend try and pull himself together.
"OH FOR GOD SAKE!" Said Connie angrily passing her helmet and jacket to a nurse, she pulled on some rubber gloves and joined Jacob by the patient.
"Hi." Said Jacob smiling at her.
"Don't you start as well." Smirked Connie as she searched for the location of the bleed.
"That was quite an entrance...I think you might have broke him." Chuckled Jacob nodding over to Cal.
"But not you?" Wondered Connie playfully.
"There..." said Jacob pointing to the gushing artery.
"Nice spot." Said Connie clamping the bleed.
"...you already broke me...the first day we met!" Jacob told her honestly.
It was Connie's turn to stand shocked as she watch Jacob's retreating from, throwing his gloves in the waste bin he left resus.
"Erm...c..c...call a surgical team." She told no one in particular. "Get them down here ASAP."
"Yes Mrs Beauchamp." Said Cal.
"Oh, it's nice of you to join us Dr Knight...do you think you can manage from here?" Asked Connie in disbelief taking back the belongings for the nurse.
"Yes...sorry..." muttered Cal feeling embarrassed.
"You wanted to see me?" Asked Jacob walking into Connie's office.
Standing from her desk, she rounded it to stand in front of Jacob. "Yes...erm...I err...just wanted to say thank you for today in resus..." said lle looking nervous.
"No problem sweet cheeks." He smiled.
Connie rolled her eyes and smiled at the use of his pet name for her. Looking at him as she took a deep breath she asked. "I...would...erm...yes, well...do you...would you-" "You've never done this before, have you?" Teased Jacob.
"I've never had to..." whispered Connie as if it was a big secret. "...so, can't I take you out to dinner Staff Nurse Masters?" She asked. "Meet me out front in ten minutes?"
"See you there." Agreed Jacob with a beaming smile.
Climbing onto the back of Connie's bike Jacob wrapped his arms around her waist. "Ready?" She asked starting the engine.
"Yep." Pulling out of the car park Jacob spotted Cal and gave him a cheeky salute as they drove passed.
The End
