Sapphire Bennett seemed to be just a normal everyday teenager. She enjoyed school and went out with her 'human' friends most days. But Sapphire wasn't normal. Her best friends were the Nightmare King and the Sandman. Sandy was introduced to her by her younger siblings, Jamie and Sophie, and Sapphire had met Pitch on the first night home from her exchange in Spain - she had been sent to Spain to go to school, and some Spanish kids had come to Sapphire's school. Sapphire heard all about Pitch's defeat from both her siblings, and Pitch told his side of the story. Sapphire had to sympathize with Pitch.
That Monday changed her life forever.
She was walking home from school, listening to Fall Out Boy on her earphones and wondering who would be visiting that night - Sandy or Pitch? Sapphire stepped out into the road, intending to cross. She didn't hear it coming, her music was blasting too loud. She didn't see it coming, her eyes were on the pavement. The car just suddenly hit her. Sapphire felt herself hit the ground, and that was the last thing she felt.
