Disclaimer: I do not own Gilmore Girls

A/N: Hey, guys! I would like to say that I am very disappointed by the lack of reviews on my latest chapter of 'Fire of the Heart'. Well, I hope you like this one-shot. It was actually a story I had to write for class. I'm not sure if I like it very much, but I hope you do. Um...Collin is thirteen at the beginning of the story. Enjoy!

'What do I want to be when I grow up?' Collin Mcrea asked himself one night. Well, truthfully He had been asked this question every night since he could remember. But, it was never himself who had asked him. It was his brother Markl. He was seven years younger than Collin and always full of questions. But, it seemed that at night the only question that was on his mind was this. And every night Collin would dodge the question and ask, 'what do you want to be when you grow up?' Every night a different answer would come out of his mouth. Sometimes he would say that he wanted to be a fireman or a police officer, others he would say a pirate or a 'spaceman'. Each night after telling him what he would be he would tell him a story about how he would become the person and what his life would be like.

But, tonight was the first time in over a month that the question had popped into his head. For over a month he had nobody to ask him this question, nor did he have the strength to ask it himself. The question had been floating through everyone's mind, but nobody dared to ask it, not even to themselves. One may consider this strange behavior, but it reality it was perfectly acceptable.

Collin Mcrea had just lost his brother. Not in the sense that he had run away, or been kidnapped. That would have been better. Anything would have been better. But, this was not. His brother had just died. He had been murdered by a man who has yet to be caught. This is what scared Collin the most.

He tried to push the thoughts of the murder away. But, it was difficult. It was one thing to hear about a death, but to watch your own brother die was completely different. The shot of the gun, the cries heard just seconds later were still fresh in his mind. Once again he tried to push the thoughts away and think back to the question.

'What do I want to be when I grow up?'

He still had no idea. He thought of things that he was ardent about, like running and painting. But, all of the things that he came up with were things that he would do with Markl. The mere thought of doing them left him feeling bereft.

Just then a thought occurred to him. He knew what he wanted to do.

Fifteen years later, Collin Mcrea had been doing what he thought to do when he was thirteen. He had never been happier. Though, the people he met ranged from the child prodigy with the egotist of a mother to those with much humility, he was never adamant on helping any of them.

His beeper went off and he rushed to the room. He always smiled when he went into a room, to insure whoever was there, that everything would be ok. But this time as he entered the room, his smiled faltered as he looked down at the small boy, no more than six, with a bullet in his leg. A single tear ran down his cheek before he started to work.

All those years ago, the thought he had was 'When I grow up I'm going to be a surgeon. I wont let other families lose someone like Markl.'

A/N: Like I said, it's just a short one-shot. I hoped you liked it. Please review!!!
