Yay for being in a many year slump. x.x Well, this is my first Death Note drabble, so hopefully the characters don't seem too off. Please read and review.

L would always remain beyond Raito's understanding. Raito could think just as quickly and sharply as L and worked hard to stay just one step ahead of the master detective. They were an even match, the two geniuses, both so similar, and yet so different.

They just had to stand by each other, and one could list off every aspect that set the two so far apart.

Raito was clean, poised, dressed sharply, and always seemed to know just what to say or do to get someone on his side. L was one of the few who was not blinded by his natural charm.

L stood in his unatural position, hunched over, nibbling on this thumb while countless calculations and possibilities ran through his head. Raito always wondered what went on behind those wide eyes that made him seem almost childlike at times, even with the deep bags beneath them.

Perhaps the answer was in L's odd, and definitely not healthy, eating habits.

Raito frowned at the cup of coffee in front of him, watching as the last sugar cube dissolved in to the lightening liquid. Eight sugar cubes seemed to be a favorite amount for L. The young genius wondered if perhaps this really would provide a better understanding of the eccentric man who dared call Raito his friend.

It was just a notion he had, but once the idea stuck to him, Raito found that he had to follow through with it. He would do almost anything to try and understand L. Of course, it was only to further his own goals. It had nothing to do with this supposed "friendship" they had struck up. It really had nothing at all to do with that fake front. His frown deepened, and he immediately pushed those troubling thoughts away.

He raised the cup to his lips and took a sip, swishing the liquid around his mouth for a moment, trying to think as L would.

He grimaced and swallowed. Glaring at the cup, he dumped the rest of the disgustingly sweet concoction down the sink.

L would always remain beyond Raito's understanding.
