A/N: So I heard this song on Glee last night, and I think that it's really pretty but also very sad. So of course, being the JONAShead that I am, I thought it would be great to write a fic on it and do something a little different. I don't intend it to be a Kacy at all (not that I have anything against the pairing); I just really like the idea of Kevin being there for Macy...and after writing it, I want a big brother haha. It's short but kinda sweet. Review, please and thank you!

Disclaimer: JONAS does not belong to me. Neither does "Smile" (the Charlie Chaplin version or the Glee cover).

It was 5 o'clock in the afternoon. Kevin had just finished an exhausting cheerleading practice and was ready to go home and watch Leprechaun Hunter with Frankie. The last thing he expected when he turned the corner was to find Macy Misa huddled up in front of her locker, her body shaking slightly.

"Macy?" He sat down gingerly next to the slumped girl. "Are you okay?"
A choked sob escaped from her throat, and his eyes widened. "Are you crying?"

"No."

"It sure sounds like you are,"

She let out a watery laugh and lifted her head from her knees to look at him. Her cheeks were tear-stained, and her eyes were watery. "You caught me. I thought no one else was here, otherwise I wouldn't have…" She wiped at her face hastily. Kevin dug through his bag and found a tissue for her, which she took gratefully.

"Do you want to talk about it?" he asked hesitantly.

She bowed her head. "You're going to think I'm being stupid."

He put his hand over hers and squeezed gently before releasing it. "If it's upsetting you, then it's not stupid."

"There's this boy." She paused, taking a deep breath. "I've liked him for a long time, and I was going to tell him…then I found out that I was too late…he's with…someone else… she trailed off as tears began to slide down her face again.

"Don't cry Macy. You know I hate it when you cry."

"I'm sorry." She sniffed. "I just…I thought he was the one, you know?"

He sat helplessly as she cried. This wasn't the Macy he knew. That Macy was full of energy with bright eyes and a ready smile. She was one of his closest friends, and he hated seeing his friends upset. Even though he hadn't done anything to upset her (this time, anyway), there had to be something he could do to make her feel better.

But what could he do? It wasn't like he could go beat the guy up or put the pieces of her heart back together. What did girls do when they were upset? He usually played his guitar…

At the sudden movement next to her, Macy looked up to see him holding his guitar in his lap. "Kevin, what are you doing?" she asked hoarsely.

"When we were younger, my mom would sing this song to us whenever we got hurt or upset about something. Now I'm going to share it with you."
As he strummed, he began to sing softly.

Smile though your heart is aching

Smile even though it's breaking

When there are clouds in the sky

You'll get by

If you smile through your pain and sorrow

Smile, and maybe tomorrow

You'll see the sun come shining through for you

He looked up at her and sighed in relief. Macy was smiling again. It wasn't her usual bright grin, but it was there.

"That song always makes me feel better…" He trailed off when he noticed the wetness in her eyes. "Oh no, you're crying again. What did I do?"

She shook her head quickly, swiping at her eyes. "No, no…these are happy tears."

He was slightly confused. "Oh…so you're okay?"

"Thanks to you, I think I will be." She hesitated for a second. "Can you play it again?"

He smiled at her, glad to see a bit of her usual sparkle in her eyes. "No problem."
