A FACE IN THE FIRE

Einon's dagger plunged into the wooden pole causing small splinters to violently scrape him on the exposed flesh. The rhythmic movement of the blade had a hypnotic effect on him.

With a sharp intake of breath, he looked at the shiny blade and a vague image began to form in his mind. An image that soon got a face, sharp features and a veil of dark red hair circling it.

Could it be her?

What were the odds that this girl who atacked him the day before was the same girl from almost twelve years ago...

It couldn't be.

But the irritating sensation that he was wrong left him restless. Once more, his eyes focused on the dagger in his hand and tried to summon the memory that he burried years ago.

A girl, no older than himself at the time, with a terrified, perplexed look on her face. Her long red hair blended in the fire behind her, giving the whole sight an unworldly appearence.

Almost unaware, he rushed down the stairs, frightening a few servants. As he abruptly opened the door to the dungeon, he took a moment to survey her.

Kara stood up with her back firmly pressed to the cold stone wall behind her. He slowly began walking down the stairs, not taking his eyes of her for an instant. When she rushed towards him, he was glad that he was cautious enough to keep at a distance.

''I remember you.'' He was pleased how the words menaged to awake fear in her.

''I remember you.'' He said more firmly '' hair, red as fire... You gave me this scar.'' Gently removing the shirt from his chest he carresed the pale scar above his jerking heart.

She turned her face away from him to hide the fear and hate that his words envoked.

Standing so close to her, he couldn't help but admire her beauty. In some dark corner of his mind he wished to see how her face looked when she smiled instead twisted in hatred for him. She would make a lovely queen. Once clean and in fine clothes, she would be exceptional.

Turning away from her, he called for the guards and instructed them to take her to his quarters. She tried to brake away from the bulky armed men, but soon realised the futility of it and reluctantly obeyed. Einon walked behind them, once more looking over her.

A fine queen indeed.
