Hawaii Five-O belongs to others. I'm just visiting their universe.

This story is both a follow-up to "Friday the Thirteenth, Squared" and a response to a challenge to write a story that doesn't include Steve or Danny (except, perhaps, as objects of conversation).

SATURDAY THE FOURTEENTH

Kono looked terribly worried as he wandered into Chin's cubicle. "Hey, Bruddah," he began tentatively, "I got a big problem. You gotta help me. Danny's gonna kill me when he finds out."

"Finds out what?" Chin questioned. "What did you do?" Whatever it was, it had to be bad for the Hawaiian detective to look so worried.

"Remember that yesterday was Friday the Thirteenth? And Danny was gonna go to that surf meet only someone took the battery from his Mustang?"

Realization dawned. "Kono, you didn't . . ." Chin looked at his colleague. "Why would you do that?"

Kono looked like a lost puppy. "You know about Friday the Thirteenth and bad luck. I didn't want da Kaikaina to get hurt. You know how angry Steve would've been."

Chin did. They'd all faced the wrath of Hurricane McGarrett. "Well, what are you gonna do about it? You can't just put the battery back. He'll really suspect something then."

"Couldn't put it back even if I wanted to. I hid it in my back yard and one of my nephews took it. His car battery died and he needed a new one. So he took Danny's." Kono shook his head. "I got real big pilikia. I must of been lolo to even think about pulling this stunt."

"So," Chin said with a grin. "You gonna confess? Danny can charge you with grand theft battery!"

"This is no joke! He was really mad about missing that surf meet. And Steve's not gonna be too happy about it either. He'll have me on stakeouts for a month with no lunch breaks."

Chin couldn't restrain a chuckle. "That'd be cruel and unusual punishment, Bruddah!"

Kono was beginning to panic. "You got any ideas?"

"Maybe," the older detective replied. "Obviously, you can't get the battery back from your nephew and you can't put a new one back in his car. What if you buy him one, wrap it up as a very early birthday present, and leave it on his desk?"

And that's just what Kono did!
