The six members of the CSI graveyard shift sat around the break room table. Greg stared at the burrito in front of him; he was extremely hungry (they all were) but couldn't bring himself to eat. Warrick had his hand on the handle of his coffee mug but only watched as Nick kept absent-mindedly stirring more and more sugar into his coffee. It registered somewhere in Warrick's mind that Nick drank his coffee blacker than anyone other one among them except Sara, but right now it just wasn't making sense. Nothing seemed to make sense. Similar thoughts must what have been what was going through Sara's head as she stared blankly at the wall, her fingers shredding the wrapping of the antacids she popped into her mouth every few minutes. Catherine fiddled with her cell phone, she'd texted Lindsey twice already…she wanted to call her but didn't want to be a nag. It's just that she was so worried. The TV was on, but only Grissom watched openly, calm features unreadable as the reporter announced the release of Frank Bishop due to insufficient evidence to pin him to the brutal murder of his three children.
"Mr. Bishop has been able to cast reasonable doubt, which is just as it should be since he did not do this terrible thing…the evidence collected against him (or that allegedly works against him) is circumstantial at the very best…"
Grissom lifted the remote and pressed the button to turn off the TV before the lawyer could start ranting about shoddy police work and faulty forensics.
The team sat in silence for a while with only the hum of the garish fluorescent lights to drive away the dark thoughts that swirled through their brains. Greg stared. Warrick watched. Nick stirred. Sara shredded. Catherine fiddled. Gris just sat there. Who can tell what goes on in the entomologist's mind?
After a few minutes of painful silence, Grissom stood up.
"There's nothing more we can do here. Better that we go home and fight another battle, another day."
Slowly, one by one, the team followed their leader out of the break room and back into the unbelieving world.
