In Another Life
A Lister/Rimmer FanFiction
The possibilities of other dimensions are playing on Lister's mind
:-:
Lister was thinking about dimensions. He had been doing it more and more over the years and had soon become the basis of his favourite daydreams, taking the place on even Fiji in his mind.
Of course somewhere out there was probably a dimension where he did make it to Fiji. And then there was the dimension where Jim and Bexley were living out their lives with their mother/father. And finally there was whatever dimension Rimmer was currently in, playing his part as Ace.
Rimmer. He had dreamt about him again, no longer surprised when his unconscious had taken a sexual turn and he was making out with an extremely horny version of Arnold J., chicken soup technician.
But at this particular moment it wasn't his Rimmer he was thinking about; instead his mind stretched out across the stars and wondered if in any of those dimensions there was a Lister who had persuaded Rimmer to stay. That hadn't been such a coward – so unbelievably blind to his own feelings as so chuck Rimmer out of an airlock in a baking-foil coffin, complete with wig.
Was there a dimension out there – somewhere – where instead of telling him to go, Lister had begged Rimmer to stay? Begged him with his words and his hands and his heart until there was no way Rimmer could even contemplate leaving?
Were there Lister's out there who had taken the risk and found Rimmer loved them back?
His mind did wander now to his Rimmer, the way it inevitably would, and then he ached inside not knowing if the man was alive somewhere missing him, or circling the glowing planet with all those other Ace's that had died heroes, but left their Listers behind.
Lister turned in his bunk and closed his eyes, waiting for the dreams to take him back. At least there Rimmer wanted him; at least there he could beg the man to stay.
