I don't own Kingdom Hearts even though that would be really really cool. I'm not making any money or anything, all right?

Please read it and review it and be really really nice to it ok?

Ties of Destiny

When she turns 13, every girl receives a paopu fruit and is told to save it until they find the person they want to spend the rest of their lives with. Then the two of them share the paopu and their destinies are intertwined. Nobody really knows how it works, but it's always been that way. You can only share it with one person, and then your lives are bound for eternity.

At least, that's what the girls who are lucky enough to have someone to tell them are told.

You came to the islands when you were 12. You probably don't remember… you were unconscious when you washed up on the shore. Nobody knew where you came from, and you were all alone. The mayor took you in, but he didn't spend a lot of time at home. There was usually nobody around to keep you company.

When you turned 13 the mayor threw you a party, a coming of age sort of thing. Do you remember who gave you your paopu fruit? The nice lady from the bookstore. But nobody told you what it did, they all assumed you knew.

Oh, you had heard rumors. You knew that when you liked someone, you shared the fruit with them and that was how they knew. You didn't understand that it was forever, and that there could be only one.

He was just your age, but full of big plans. Sailing away to distant worlds and all that. Maybe that was what attracted you to him. Or maybe it was the fact that he was an outsider, just like you, that he didn't know anybody here either.

You thought you loved him. You thought he was perfect and you wanted to tell him how much he meant to you.

He had never seen a paopu fruit before. His eyes were wide and innocent as you took a bite and then offered the star-shaped fruit to him. He accepted with a smile. You smiled back.

It's not your fault, you couldn't have known.

So when he looked into your eyes and told you he loved you, you were happy. And when he said you were the only person he ever cared about, you hugged him tight. He smelled like coconut, your favorite smell. You never wanted to let go.

And when you found his message the next day, inside a bottle…

The message that said you could never be together…

And he couldn't live without you…

And it's not your fault and you didn't know but you should have known and you never ever wanted to let go and it wasn't supposed to end this way.

You think about him when you walk on the beach alone, always alone. Your tears sprinkle the sand and sparkle in the twilight. You cry because you had to let go, because you couldn't hold on forever.
