The sun was setting on the horizon and Jane could see Maura's silhouette coming in her direction, the sound of the waves far away, the sand tickling her skin.

"This place is amazing!" Maura had a soft smile, and her eyes were looking into the soul of Jane Rizzoli.

"It is…but you make this place more beautiful. I wish we could stay here forever." Jane averted her eyes back to the horizon. "No work, no death, no heartbreak, no hurt… just... us."

"You know we can't do that. You need to live. Your family needs you. Your job needs you. Think of how many lives you can bring closure to…" Maura then pulled herself down beside the lanky brunette and took the detective's hands into her own.

"Why? I can't see any reason to do this anymore. You won't be there Maura. Why did you do this to me?" Jane choked as her words were trying to leave her mouth. "You…why can't you stay here? Nobody knows you are here. Just me"

"Because I made a choice Jane. I can't even imagine what you had to do to let them release me for this weekend. But if I run, you'll lose everything too. I can't bear this. We'll go back to Boston and I'll face the path that I chose." The words were strong because she knew that if she trembled just a little Jane would make even more sacrifices for her.

Jane couldn't take anymore. She started to cry and with one motion she put her hands in the back of the Doctors neck and leaned in for a kiss. A kiss that would show all of her love and adoration and hope. Maura deepened the kiss. It would be a long time before she could kiss her again. If ever.

After what seemed like years, they stopped. Both faces stained with tears. Both knowing that this was their last moment together. Jane looked back to the horizon, the sun saying goodbye as if knew that this was their goodbye to each other too. Jane never thought this would happen, that Maura could do this, that she would launch herself onto a path of self-destruction. She felt guilty, she should have seen this earlier, saved her from all this storm…

"It's not your fault" Maura said as if reading her mind. She stood up, offering her hand to Jane to get up. "Let's go. We need to face this. I need to face this." And then…they walked off the beach and in direction to reality.

Jane snapped back to reality as everyone in court around her stood up. The jury foreman then gave the paper with the verdict on it and the judge looked to the accused with pity.

"For the accusation of murder of Brad Adams, what's the jury verdict?"

"Guilty."

Maura turned and encountered the dark eyes of Jane Rizzoli. She was the only one that could see through her and she enjoyed this brief moment with all her being. She could see the hurt in the detective eyes and the only thing she could think was that she was sorry. And she mouthed this very sentence.

"I'm sorry."

Jane face hardened. She was fighting her tears and didn't want to stop looking at Maura while the officers stood beside her and directed her outside the court. It was over.

Her life ended in that moment and she didn't know what to do.

"Goodbye," was her whisper to the already empty courtroom and with the feeling of emptiness she left the place. And the love of her life.
