AN: You know those shows or books where there's this one sweet, innocent character who is completely incapable of protecting themselves? The damsel-in-distress type that everyone risks-and sometimes gives-their life to keep safe? Well, whenever I read a story like that, I can't help but wonder if those people feel guilty. To be fair, if I was in one of those action/adventure stories I'd probably be totally useless too, but I would feel really, really bad about it. I like to think that all the swooning princesses feel really bad too, and that their inner angst goes something like this:

The Protected

My teardrops set the world on FIRE

I screamed and I cried and the flames leapt HIGHER

And I ran but couldn't escape the SHAME

As I searched far and wide for someone to BLAME

I fell to my knees while they fell to the ground

My lips moved but made no sound

Their hands grasped hilts but mine could only shake

As the wind whisked my words away

My teardrops drenched the world in BLOOD

As they fought and they did in the name of LOVE

And I was saved that fateful day

When my tears set the world ABLAZE
