Wood, Metal, and Vibrating Air
Whispered Promises
She couldn't hear it at first. In fact, the young girl had been laying in bed, awake, for a long time before she heard the first chime of the piano, which caused her to listen closely. After a few minutes she pulled herself out of bed and followed the sound to the study that belonged to Lucius Malfoy.
She stood just beyond the cracked doors that let the golden light fall into the barely lit hallway. The piano was played slowly, peacefully. The deeper keys being used struck and pulled at her heart and she crept closer to the door.
"Victoria, I know you're there." The gentle, aristocratic voice said, just barely over the music, after a few short minutes.
The door creaked a little as she pushed it open and stepped into the gentle lighting. She saw his head tilt up a little, like it did when he smiled as she stepped towards him.
"Did I wake you?" he asked, still playing the gentle melody.
"No, sir." She answered.
"Then what are you doing up?" he asked, turning his head to look at her now that she had reached his side.
Her dark eyes watched his long fingers dance across the keys in an interested curiosity. With a shrug she answered, "I guess I'm just not tired. I just woke up."
He, who had been watching her, smiled, "Would you like to play?"
Her oval eyes turned their attention to him, "I don't know how."
He ceased playing to lift her into his lap, "I'll teach you." He promised in a hushed whisper as he placed his hand underneath hers. With her fingers resting gently over his, he began to play. The melody was soft and smooth. The young child rested her head back against his chest, and soon drifted to sleep.
