Please Try Again
It starts when he tries to send an Iris Message. He poises his crystal so it catches the light, grabs the drachma, and throws it in the puddle of rainbow on the table in front of him.
"Larry the centaur," he says clearly.
The message starts to form, and the image of his comrade appears. Larry is hiding behind a rock, loading a paintball gun. He rolls his eyes at Larry's antics, and his forgetfulness; they were supposed to be talking about the Party Ponies visiting camp. He's about to say something when the message fades out, and a familiar feminine voice comes on the other side.
"There were problems contacting you to Larry the centaur. Please try again."
He blinks.
This hasn't happened before; most of the time it's easy to send a message. He wonders if… No. She's fine. He would have heard something from Olympus if she wasn't. (He hopes.)
So he tries to send it again.
And again.
And again.
He's starting to get worried around the sixth time of resending when her face appears in the message. "Boo!"
He jumps and she laughs. Her eyes are a pretty light blue today, with flecks of cinnamon brown inside.
"Did I scare you?" she asks, her smile as bright as the sun.
He nods feebly, heart still pounding (but not from the fright anymore). "Why did you do that?"
She shrugs. "Things have been slow at the store. I wanted to call you, but you were contacting that Larry before I could. So, I decided to have a bit of fun." She pauses."It was fun, wasn't it?"
"Maybe for you," he says before he could think. He mentally kicks himself.
Her grin widens, her eye color morphing from blue to bright purple. "Wonderful. That was the point. Oh, and Chiron, I got some more of those Tai berries in this morning; I'll send them over later." The shop bell rings on the other end, and the sounds of footsteps echo in the back room. "Customers! Got to go," Iris says with excitement. "Call me sometime, huh?"
The message disconnects before Chiron can say anything. He sighs. "Goodbye."
