It's the ones that presumably have no heart that you need to watch out for. I learnt this lesson when I met James Norrington.
And it's the ones that are so full of passion, the ones driven by life that are heartless. Name one: Elizabeth Swann.
"Hello Hope, love." Jack, slightly drunk, swaggered past me. "Fancy a get together in my quarters at lights out?" He flashed those gold teeth at me, foul breath expelled forth and I moved back.
"Ask Elizabeth." Slyly, my cousin has been a bitch, looking elsewhere while Will is away. "She will acquiesce."
"Dear Lizzy has already." He leaned forward, hazy in his cloud of rum fumes. "But a night is very long."
I brandished my gun. "Piss off." He moved toward Elizabeth, who was fondling a leather folder. Letters of Marque out once again.
Norrington looked on, raised eyebrows, not impressed. He watched Elizabeth converse with Jack, as did I, their lips were inches apart. My heart ached for him, the woman he loved, flirting with a dirty pirate.
"Is she oblivious to the fact that that man has sent her latest fiancée to his death?" Sarcastic but sincere. He scratched his dirty yet attractive face.
"She is oblivious to most things." I said, very much aware of his looming presence, one that disconcerted me.
He sighed. "So it would seem."
Night had fallen. I walked on the deck, ears ringing with the moans from the captain's quarters. Alone at last. Yet not quite.
I heard a sound, shuffling feet, curses in a deep tone belonging only to…
"James!" I ran towards him, stumping my toe on a bucket. Though the sea was enveloping me in a myriad of sounds, I could hear the distinct sound of a pistol being cocked.
His silhouette was clearly outlined against the night sky, his form casting a tragic figure. I grabbed his shoulders, they were shaking. I put my hand to his face, it was twisted with torture.
"What are you doing?" My voice strained, desperate. "She's not worth it. Please, please put it down."
He grabbed my hands passionately and I writhed away. "Yes she is." His eyes, illuminated only by the moonlight pierced into mine. "I cant live without you Hope, don't give yourself away to Sparrow."
Despite the shock, and the racing of my heart; I laughed. "I'm not."
He smiled, the first time I ever saw him do so. He pulled me into his arms, into a tight and unrelenting embrace.
I did not draw back, secretly, I had been waiting for this to happen.
And the pistol crashed to the deck beneath us.
