Indian Summer

It was the last week of summer vacation. Hinamori Amu was sleeping in on her day off.

She was delighting in the sweetest dream of Hotori-kun's lips when…

Ding - Dong! The doorbell rang out and she heard her sister Ami's scurrying downstairs and the murmur of unfamiliar voices.

"Daddy! Daddy! It's A-wiens! Amu could hear Ami scream from her room upstairs.

"Nan da to!" Hinamori-san, the father, grumpily rose from the breakfast table and shuffled to the door as Ami impatiently tugged him by the hand.

"O-hayou!" met Hinamori-san when he reached the open door. Hinamori-san looked down at Ami and grumbled, "These guys are gaijin, not seijin. Though gaijin isn't very nice to say either…"

Catching himself, he responded with a formal 'good morning' and asked what was the business of these Americans in suits, slowly, so they wouldn't misunderstand.

The taller, dark-haired man answered, "My name is Elder Kurtz and this is Elder Taylor," he said, gesturing to his companion. "We're missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. May we come in? We would like to speak with you about the gospel of Jesus Christ." Elder Kurtz did his best to belie his grand statement, making his request in a reserved tone.

"We already go the temple every week!" Hinamori-san replied impatiently. "What more do you want?"

"Is that so? So you're already recommend-holding members?" Elder Kurtz asked with genuine curiosity in his tone, but he couldn't keep the hungry wolf's gleam out of his eyes.

"Recommended for what? Can I go finish my breakfast?" Hinamori-san began to shut the door.

"Demo-! I thought you were talking about the temple of God!"

"Amida Buddha. It's the same difference isn't it?"

"But only the Church of-"

The door shut in Elder Kurtz's face.

"Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has the fullness of the truth…"

"You could just say 'Mormon church'," Elder Taylor chimed in.

"But…never mind, we'll try again tomorrow." And the elders, one dejected, the other ever-cheerful, moved on to the next house.
