Rin was beautiful, once.

There was a time where everyone loved her, where her soft hands could heal damaged souls and her gentle smile could rival the echoes of angels. She wasn't perfect, oh, no – but she damn well tried her best to be, and that was more than enough.

(But the world was unfair, and no one could stay beautiful forever.)

First she fell from grace – it's a long fall, isn't it, they whispered from the shadows, such a long way to fall when you were flying so close to the sky – and then she fell out of favour with the rest. As time wore on, her hands became wrinkled and rough and calloused, while her smile grew twisted and dagger-sharp and bitter.

Of course, Rin had her excuses. She blamed the vicious, useless cycle of running while staying rooted in place. She blamed her friends for taking her gifts for granted and leaving her in the dust once they'd had their fill. She blamed her heart for adoring someone treacherous and cruel.

But in the end, excuses were just that – excuses. And at the end of the day, she only had herself to blame.

She dug her nails into her palms, relishing in the sting of pain that pierced through her skin and drew tiny drops of blood. Her hands were losing their powers, anyway, so there was no point in keeping them in good condition when all she could do now was break and ruin and destroy

'Please don't do that.'

Rin narrowed her gaze to slits, boring holes into the floorboards. She didn't even have to look up to know who it was.

Len.

The boy shuffled closer, his footsteps slow and tentative. When she did not react to his approach, he leaned forward to unfurl her tightly-balled fists, running his thumb over her palms with an aching sort of gentleness.

His butterfly touch was warm and real, and Rin resented him for it, just a little bit.

'You're not obliged to stay,' Rin finally said, when the silence began to feel too heavy for her tastes. She knew he had better things to do than to sit around and look after an ugly girl moping over her own stupidity. 'These dumb hands of mine can't help you anymore. You know that.'

'Yeah?' he murmured, but his rueful eyes told her something else entirely.

Your hands weren't made for destruction. You know that.

And she did know that. But every time she picked herself off the floor and tried to do something good again, it always crumbled to dust some way or another. There was no point in saving something that was already beyond fixing. There was no point in trying.

Not even Len could save her.

'... Yeah.'

Rin was beautiful, once.

(But never again.)
