A/N: Here is my second fanfic. It just kind of came to me while I was working and it has been bouncing around in my head for a while now. So, I wrote it down and I liked how it turned out. Unlike my first fanfic, I actually know where I am going with this one.

Read, enjoy and review!

Chapter 1, Broken promise

It was not supposed to go like this. Today, he was supposed to be teaching his sister how to ice skate. Instead they were precariously balanced, hardly daring to breathe as the cracks formed underneath the both of their feet.

How brown eyes glanced nervously down at the ice, and he tried not to let his fear show, for his sister's sake.

"It's okay. It's okay," Jack said encouragingly. "Don't look down, just look at me."

"Jack, I'm scared." She hardly dared to even whisper her fear, thinking that it alone would cause the ice to shatter.

"I know, I know," Jack said soothingly, hoping that his voice remained steady. "But you're gonna be alright." He was just as scared as she was. "You're not going to fall in," he added in what he hoped sounded like confidence. "We're gonna have a little fun instead!"

"No we're not!" her voice starting to give way to hysteria.

"Would I trick you?" He could see her shaking even from where he stood on the ice.

"Yes! You always play tricks."

Jack had to chuckle a bit; that was the truth all right. "Well alright. But not, not this time. I promise." He watched as the cracks spread a little more. "I promise. You're gonna be…" he gulped trying to steady his voice, "You're gonna be fine." He looked right into her fear filled eyes. "You have to believe in me."

A flicker a faith began to spread across her face; her big brother had always been there for her. She just needed to believe

"You wanna play a game?" Jack asked, trying to take her mind off of the quickly growing cracks. "We're gonna play hopscotch, like we play every day."

"It's as easy as, uh, one," he took the first step toward the shore and grimaced as the ice cracked underneath his weight. He covered up his grimace by whirling his arms around pretending to lose his balance. "Whoa!" he yelled playfully, as his sister giggled at him.

"Two," he placed his other foot down.

"Three!" he hopped to thicker ice, and knelt down to pick up his staff that had been left near the shore line. "Alright, now it's your turn."

"One," he counted her steps for her, and the ice crumbled faster.

"Two." She gasped as she saw the cracks spread.

"Alright, alright," he chanted to himself.

"Thr…" and the ice shattered from underneath her skates.

Her scream was cut off as she plunged into the freezing water. Jack made a desperate grab for her, but she sank too quickly.

"Julie!" he yelled helplessly as he felt for her in the freezing water. "No. No!" He grabbed his staff and shoved the hooked end under the water. How deep could the pond really be? The more he felt around with his staff and found nothing. The fearful thought that she was gone nagged at his mind, but he refused to believe it.

"Julie! Please answer me!" He yelled into the murky depths. "Please," he begged. He heard footsteps crunch through the snow and someone yelling his name, but he didn't care.

"I promised her," he said through choked gasps. "I promised that she would be okay."

"Julie…" he whispered as strong hands pulled him off the ice and shakily to his feet.

He blinked several times as his father shook him by the shoulders. "Jack! Jackson! What happened?"

Jack looked back at the broken ice. "Julie…she, she fell through," he whispered. "I couldn't save her."
