Alrighty, everyone! I dunno if anyone's done something like this before- although I'm sure that someone has- but I just really wanted to do it. Kinda unsure where it's going... but I'll pick it up eventually, I think.

Disclaimers- no, of COURSE I don't own any Twilight stuff! Jay's mine, though! ^_^

Enjoy!

Fifteen year-old Jay lay on his bed, looking out the window into the cold gray light that was streaming through it. He was a fairly stocky boy of average height and was in fine physical condition from his years of playing baseball. He had reddish-brown hair that stuck up a bit in the front and warm, beautiful, chocolate-colored eyes that glowed as the morning light caught them.

It was very early in the morning, but Jay couldn't fall back asleep. There was a funny tingling feeling that was running up and down his spine, and something rather like a mental itch was preventing him from relaxing.

He heard soft footsteps in the hallway and knew that his mother was awake and was preparing her breakfast. He tunes her out as he continued to seek out sleep.

Suddenly, an awful wailing split the sleepy silence that lay over the house. Terrified, Jay shot out of bed, his eyes wide. Hearing his mother screaming, Jay rushed to the door of his bedroom. He wrenched it open and cried out in shock when he looked down the hallway to see orange tongues of flame licking hungrily at the edges of the kitchen door.

A strange calm stole over Jay, and he turned back towards his room. He briskly crossed it , caught in a dream-like state, and threw open his window. He scrambled through it and landed softly in the dewy grass. He stood back and watched his house go up in flames, heedless of the screaming sirens and yelling men around him.

A man was tugging on Jay's elbow. "Are you all right, son?" he asked urgently. Jay stared at him unseeingly.

"Where is everyone?" Jay whispered, not to the man, but to the world in general. The man looked down and said quietly, "I'm sorry, son. Nobody made it out but you."

Jay recoiled as though the man had struck him. His eyes glazed over and he mouthed wordlessly before saying in a strangled whisper, "No…." With that, Jay turned and sprinted off into the woods, ignoring the surprised shouts from behind him.

He ran and ran and ran, wanting to run so far and so hard that he ran himself into the ground and never got back up. His breath came in ragged gasps, and he began to slow down. Finally, he sank down to the leafy ground and leaned back against a tree, sobbing brokenly.

Suddenly, a deep voice full of concern said, "Hey- are you all right there?" Jay didn't look up; he didn't want to face the firemen. When the person began to shake him persistently, however, Jay glanced up- and stared. It wasn't a fireman that he saw standing over him, but a pale, remarkably handsome young man with dark hair an deep golden eyes. The man said, "Are you okay?"

Jay struggled for words, shaking his head, and then said jerkily, "Fire- my house- my family…." He stopped as tears pricked at his eyes again and threatened to pour out.

The man sighed, and was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "What's you name?"

"Jay," answered Jay miserably. The man nodded.

"Well, Jay," he said, "My name's Emmett Cullen, and I'd like you to come with me." Jay glanced at him questioningly, and Emmett smiled. "I can't very well leave you here to starve, can I?" he said. Jay smiled sadly, and stood up shakily to follow Emmett through the forest.

Sorry if this one was a little short- I'll try to make later ones a little longer, but I'm not guaranteeing anything... but then, I go for quality, not quantity! :D
