He's a scared little boy when he first meets her. He's in trouble with the police, him and his friends on the run from Javert and his men. A rally gone wrong ended up with two policemen being killed and the blame thrown on them. Obviously, as the leader, he's their prime suspect.
They have to cover their tracks. Never using their own names, never staying in the same place for too long. Joly meets a girl called Musichetta, falls completely in love with her. They leave as soon as the 'WANTED' pictures spread to that town. Joly and his love cry for their lost relationship, and Joly has been reserved and lonely ever since.
It seems that they're all popular now. There's CCTV footage all over the news, they're interviewing people. Apparently their harmless rally to raise awareness ran a lot deeper than they thought. The police have found out about their plans, their ideas for a free country.
They started in Paris, moved quickly from place to place. It's when Marius almost gets caught that they realise they have to leave France. He springs into action as soon as the boy stumbles through the door, his hair messy and a scratch on his arm.
They move to England. Feuilly knows how to speak a scarce amount of English, so, as they travel on their rickety, cramped boat, he teaches them how to say basic phrases.
They reach Dover quickly, and Enjolras has an unnerving feeling in the pit of his stomach. They learn how to adjust to English life quite quickly, knowing how to base a life on lies by now. They find an apartment, the landlord more inebriated than Grantaire used to be. The walls are thin, the curtains barely cover the windows, and there is only one bed and a sofa, but the group of them try and call it home.
They're known in England now. They overhear it on the radio they find in the back of a cupboard. They have to change everything about themselves. Their names, their look. He has to cut his curls off, throw his favourite red hoodie away. They decide to move.
Due to Feuilly's vague knowledge of England, they end up in London. They end up in a small rented room, smaller than their last residence. It stinks and they can hear their neighbours going at it every night, but they call it home. It's busy and chaotic, and he likes it.
They meet their neighbours on a Tuesday morning. It's cold outside and Enjolras hears shouting in the hall. He decides to ignore it, choosing to let them argue. That doesn't stop Grantaire, though, as he storms out of the room and yells at them. Enjolras follows, preparing to apologise and let them get back to screaming at each other. However, when he gets there, he stops short and gapes. There she is.
He learns that her name is Éponine. Her boyfriend is Montparnasse and they've been together for a year, on and off. He loves her, she become his escape. He's always afraid, wary of having fun. He could get caught, best not to know many people. That doesn't stop him from pouring his whole heart and soul to Éponine on a Friday afternoon when her boyfriend is out. She knows who he is and she doesn't judge him.
His friends tell him not to get attached. He knows that Joly is still heartbroken and empty, he doesn't want that. But he can't stop. He trusts her.
They need to leave. Jehan got found and he didn't escape. They've been found out, the police know that they're in London. He doesn't want to leave, but he knows they have to.
He asks her to come with them. She cries and he hugs her. She knows that he loves her, he's told her enough times. She tells him she'll follow him.
Their house is raided and he gets arrested. He gets forced into a police car, the leader, alone again, his friends put into different cars. He sees her face looking out of her apartment window as the car drives off.

He understands how Joly feels now.
