It was a warm and sunny school day in Sienma High in the town of Hinohana. The halls were filled with the sounds of teachers speaking and pencils scratching on paper. In one room, however, the speaking and scratching were accompanied with 8-bit noises. This was room 64-A, math with Mr. Pitoro Kizayami.
As he taught his class, the sounds of jumping and coins slithered into his ears. He pointed to the back of the room.
"SHIITAKE!"
A young man became startled by the yell. He was caught playing a video game in class!
"To Principal Ohoya's office. NOW!" he ordered.
The teen grabbed his stuff and walked to the principal's office.
His name was Mashiro Shiitake, "Mushy" by his friends. He was 16 and had harvest-gold hair and light brown eyes. He loved his friends like family, but most of all, he loved Nintendo. Playing it, reading it, watching it, he was obsessed. He usually wore his school uniform; a black blazer, gray plaid pants, a white shirt, a red tie and white shoes. However, on his, he had a red Smash Bros circle pinned onto the left side of his jacket. Each time he got in trouble, it was usually over playing his clear purple Game Boy Advance during math.
At Principal Ohoya's office, Mashiro was being yelled at twice as hard.
"For Kami-sama's sake, Mashiro. This is the third time this week! When will you ever learn?" he asked flabbergasted.
"I just love playing my Game Boy, sir." Mashiro spoke, sounding confident.
"It's against the school rules!" Ohoya barked.
"And what's with that horrid patch on your jacket?" he added, still sounding upset.
Mashiro pulled on the altered side of his jacket and stared.
"What about it? I love Super Smash Broth-" Mashiro protested in a serious but fanboyish tone.
"That's another rule broken! You're one strike away from being expelled!" he yelled again, getting some spit on Mashiro's face.
Mashiro lurched down the hallway after that scolding. As he walked, he found his best friend Ezra Belmont, and Reno Akato, who was a bit of a bully to him.
Ezra was 17, had short dark brown hair with red-violet streaks and moss-green eyes. She had on her uniform; a black sweater vest lined in red, a white long sleeved shirt, a gray plaid skirt, red socks and white shoes. Reno was also 17, but had brown straight hair put into a skinny ponytail and gunmetal gray eyes. His uniform was like Mashiro's, except it didn't have the patch, the blazer sleeves were torn off and the tie looked ripped up.
"Got caught playing your GBA again, huh, Mushroom Boy?" Reno taunted, tossing Mashiro's leather schoolbag at him.
"Nobody asked you, Reno!" Ezra defended, standing up to Reno.
Reno walked off, laughing in a brutish matter.
"Don't let him get to you, Mushy." Ezra told him.
Later on that day, the bell blared signaling the end of the school day. Ezra and Mashiro went straight to the bike rack and grabbed their bikes.
Mashiro's was a silver-painted adult tricycle. The basket was accented to look like an Arwing from Starfox, with blue fins on the sides. His trike's headlight was painted to look like his Smash Bros patch.
After a while, he and Ezra stopped by a grassy cliff overlooking the sea. The both of them flopped backfirst onto the soft grass.
"Come on out, Matsu." said Mashiro.
Out from his bag came a strange looking creature. It looked like a blue Arceus and it had wings like a fairy instead of a ring. As it flew, it moved like a dragonfly. It hovered around Mashiro, lightly tickling his cheek before resting on his shoulder. After a short while of looking out to sea, Ezra broke the ice.
"So... Did you sign up for that Wii tournament?" she asked.
"Oh? Oh, yeah, I signed up. You know me." Mashiro smiled.
"Of course. I just hope the success of winning doesn't get to your head." she said to him.
"Why?" he asked.
"I wouldn't wanna lose my dearest and closest friend to the greed of winning." Ezra replied, holding his hand.
"I would never act like Wario if I win." Mashiro reassured her and gave her a gentle, friendly hug.
As the trio reached home, they went through a park behind their houses. It was empty, save for a few kids playing on the slide and swings. As they went into the forest behind it, they saw a yellow gate, resembling a castle door, that was covered in moss and vines.
"This looks like the castle door from 'Super Mario World.' I wonder what it leads to!" Mashiro said as he went to try and open it up.
Ezra facepalmed after he said it. Using what strength he had, he tried to open it but to no avail. After a while and a few prickles from the vines, Mashiro simply gave up.
"Eh, can't open it." he sighed, laying on the soft grass.
"Maybe we can find a way to open it, Mushy." Ezra suggested, helping her friend up.
She then looked at her phone, it was around four. The two walked to his house and she was ready to go back to hers.
"Bye, Mushy." she waved goodbye as she headed home.
"Okay, Ezra. See you tomorrow." he answered back, locking his Arwing trike.
