Chapter One
__Murder_
Hi. My name is Brooke Lanier. I basically live a normal life; I do the things that a normal seventh grader would do. I do volunteer some of my time at the EMS station, though. I help do paperwork, cleaning, etc. (The little odd-jobs that need to be taken care of that most of the people don't think about doing.) There is something, though, that may be considered a little out of the ordinary.
I solved a murder. People told me I couldn't do it because of my age, but I have a logical brain. I investigated the murder, and talked with people that I thought might have been linked to the murder, or people who knew the person who was killed. I guess it was kind of dangerous, but I got a thrill from it. I wouldn't have gotten involved with such an affair if it hadn't been such a life-changing event.
It was a normal, long school day in late September. I had walked from my Junior High School to the Kingsport EMS station. It was hot outside, and I was more than happy to get into the comfort of artificial cooling. I walked through the doors, but everyone was gone. This puzzled me, because there was always supposed to be EMT's at the station, ready to take calls. I went to the garage and noticed that one of the vehicles was missing. I guessed there was a run they had to make. I thought it was probably a car wreck or something of the sort. Silence filled the station, and I wondered about that because Alex should have been there. He's the guy who basically keeps the place running.
"Alex, are you here?" I shouted.
Silence. I was starting to feel scared. I looked in his office, but he wasn't in his chair. I looked down, and noticed him lying down.
"Alex?" I bent over to get a closer look. He was lying in a pool of blood.
"Oh my gosh!" I grasped my face with my hands.
I called the police right away and they were there in no time. They asked me lots of questions about who I was and when I found him. It wasn't too terribly long before the gang returned.
"What's going on?" Tyler asked.
Hank, Val, and Jamie were right behind him.
"Alex..." I had started. "He's...dead."
"Oh, no!" Val began to cry. I went over to her and hugged her, trying to hold my tears in. I couldn't help it. Tears were flowing down my cheeks.
"How was he killed?" Hank asked.
"They said he was stabbed thirty-two times. Thirty-two times!" I answered.
"That's awful!" Tyler replied.
Jamie nodded his head. It was hard for all of us to deal with. I was determined to find out who murdered Alex. I began to feel so close to him. He always helped me with my problems, and became almost like a second-father. Now he was gone. I couldn't believe it.
"I'm going to try," I said.
"Try what?" Hank asked.
"I'm going to find out who murdered Alex," I replied.
"How are you going to do that?" Tyler asked.
"Well, I'm just going to have to find out what was going on in his life before he died," I stated.
"But you are only twelve!" Jamie exclaimed.
"Yeah, but I have logic," I said with a wink.
Jamie rolled his eyes.
That afternoon seemed like the longest evening at the station. We all wanted to go home, relax, and reflect on the day's happenings. I wanted to get home and think about how I was going to solve the murder. I was so determined. Little did I know that the next day, I was in for a surprise of my life.
