Beth POV
"Kill him."
Deanna's voice sounded cold and distant as she gave the command. A shot rang out a few minutes later, fired by Rick.
Pete was dead.
Things had escalated quickly in the last few moments – Pete had been on a rampage that resulted in Deanna's husband, Reg's, death. She had a look of horror on her face, like she couldn't believe that she was seeing her husband on the ground in front of her. But there he was, lying in a heap with blood spilling from a gash in his neck.
Jessie was screaming and crying. She would have fallen over if her oldest son, Ron, wasn't supporting her. Beth didn't know if they were tears of grief or relief – she would no longer have to deal with an abusive husband, after all.
Things settled down just as quickly as they had escalated, and everyone ended up going home. A few of the men collected Reg and Pete's bodies – they would bury them in the morning.
Before she left for the night, Deanna called over to Beth. "Tomorrow morning. Armory." Beth nodded.
Since her group had arrived at Alexandria, a lot had happened.
Rick and Michonne had become police officers shortly after their arrival. The positions were a perfect fit for the two. Rick was happy to be in a familiar position.
Judith had kept getting bigger and bigger. Beth suspected she was about the age of a toddler now, which meant she would be learning to walk and talk soon.
And finally, Beth and Daryl had gotten very serious. After leaving Terminus a few months ago, the couple had become closer than ever before. They shared a house together in Alexandria, next to Maggie and Glenn.
Deanna had taken Beth under her wing almost immediately after the younger girl's arrival. She recognized qualities in Beth that she had in herself – qualities that would make a good leader. Though this was unknown to anyone besides herself, Deanna had already chosen Beth as her successor. Beth had always been more of a follower, but was happy to assume a position of leadership.
Beth and Daryl were on edge at home. They were both shocked at what had happened.
"How could somethin' go so wrong?" Daryl mused out loud. Beth just shook her head.
"'Lotta things go wrong every day," Beth responded. "Pete cracked."
Daryl seemed to agree with her overview.
"What're ya doin' tomorrow?" Daryl asked her as they went to bed.
"Deanna wants me to do some stuff with her," Beth told him. "Think I'm doin some inventory and stuff like that. A groups due back from a supply run tomorrow."
"Right on," Daryl muttered. "We're goin' to the quarry, see if we can do a practice run, fer when we take that herd out."
There had been a massive walker pileup at a nearby quarry, and the group was going to try and eliminate it. "You be careful out there," Beth warned him. "Things could go wrong real fast."
He nodded in agreement, and kissed her goodnight.
"I love you, Greene," he whispered as his eyes shut. He'd adopted her last name as a nickname of sorts for her.
"I love you too, Daryl Dixon," Beth replied with a smile.
