It wasn't the first time Newt smelled the foul odor that seemed to pollute the air of the once colorful town. The blue in the sky had disappeared completely leaving nothing more than blackness where the sun long faded. The blonde ran his fingers over the rusty fence that led to the abandoned chapel, amber eyes searching in the fog for any signs of life. Knowing that the only living where not alive at all.

Holistade, once Newt's home town a place where spring never faded and colors filled the air as every wind engulfed the residents with the smell of fresh flowers. A haven for the Paladins, a once holy order created to defend the Markers and the people of Holistade. "Is this the place?" Alby asked his eyes searching the ruins with a less-than-impressed manner that made the former Holisian glare at the other boy. "Yes." Newt said simply readying himself for an attack.

Alby was an older guard for the Orgin Order and more experienced with the trafficking of holy relics to the head of the order Malcom. Malcom was an old fool Newt knew, and when he had heard that the elder had taken an interest in Holistade the Holisian knew he had better accompany Alby.

"The books should be just inside." Minho stated pointing inside the cracked doors of the chapel.

"We shouldn't go in there; it's the last remnants of God here, if we take it. He will not protect us." Newts eyed the older guard hoping that his words would change his mind.

"We have our orders." Alby snapped he himself had a bad feeling about this place, the ground under his feet had been crawling since the moment they saw the town gates.

"Let's hurry and get this damn book and be done with this!" Ben yelled pushing his way past the rest of the boy.

"NO!" Newt yelled trying to grab the younger guardsmen. Newt's fingers barely grazed Ben's shirt as the boy jumped blind into the unknown. It was only a matter of seconds before Ben reappeared at the Chapel doors a smug grin plastered on his youthful face. Newt's eyes never left the door, even after the boy and held the book up for the others to see. Something evil was stirred and Newt could feel it in his bones.

"We must leave!" Newt growled hearing the ancient groans of the dead. Alby nodded his agreement seeing the obvious discomfort in the younger guardsmen's features. The older guardsmen wasn't blind to the younger boys behavior, something dark had happened in Holistade that was no secret but the way Newt was behaving made the older guardsman suspicious. Ben walked past all the other guardsmen with the ancient book help over his head laughing showing off his prize in all glory not noticing the low rumble from beneath his feet. Turning towards Minho he clutched the book tightly to his chest like a schoolgirl.

"Looks like Elder Paige will be giving me the medal now doesn't it Guidesmen." He said in a matter of fact tone. Minho's eyes grew at the sight unfolding behind the guardsmen. A hideous deformity rose from behind a grin show on his rotting face. A Face of a man who had died man years ago his teeth black and eyes glowing red. He wore an executioner's mask and a long trench coat, a large black hate riddled with holes sitting atop his head. But it wasn't what the deformity looked like that had the men shaking in fear; it was the long scythe that he had clutched in his hands.

"BEN LOOK OUT!" Minho yelled. The deformity seemed to spark at the sound, moving like lightning he brought the scythe down only inches in front of Minho. Ben tossed the book in the air and bolted for the exit. Once again the creature attacked hot on Bens hills. It was Newt who sprang into action a long gold spear glided in the air and impaled the creature in the back pining it to the mossy earth.

"Everyone move now!" Alby yelled taking hold of the situation before someone lost a limb or their life.

"Alby, The sun is going down we don't have long before the gates seal and we will be trapped until the morning we have to move quickly." Newt's eyes moved around the area darting from every corner and resting on every building for a moment before moving to the next.

"What happened here?" Alby asked the younger boy. Newt's eyes meet his for only a second and a feeling of dread filled the older boy. "Hell."

Brynilide walked silently like she had down at least half a million times before. It sucked being the last of The Paladins it meant she was charged with watching the record hall in a town full of The Damned. The last of the men and women of Holistade lived in a small section of the town behind the Chapel that was blocked off from the rest of the town. The Damned seemed to be afraid to enter the Chapel of anywhere that was still considered sacred.

The Holisian that were left now tried to make the best of their lives relying on the last of the Paladin Order to protect them. Sadly the order only consisted of herself and her brother. There was the other who tried to leave Holistade but where killed by the Damned. So now everyone just lived life the best they could with what they had. Starving and hopeless but still found time every Sunday to stand in the Chapel and listen to Pastor Alca talk about how one day they would purge the evil from Holistade and things would go back to the days of old.

A mad man's dream her Valkan would say standing in the back of the Chapel wearing his long black robes lined in gold. The traditional look for a paladin and he wore it well, unlike her with her thin body and pale skin. She preferred a more practical approach to her fashion; leather pants with knee high boots and a simple green tunic. Her long black hair braided and resting on her shoulder falling to her hips, but Valkan was a traditionalist where she was a battle maiden.

Brynilide walked quietly around the back of the chapel lost in her thoughts when a strange shifting of the ground caught her attention. The smell of the dead filled her nostrils, Brynilide spun around whip in hand only to find the ally she had just guarded that had been filled with people living their day to day lives was empty. A quick movement to her left caught her made her turn whip in action only to have her hand grabbed in midair.

"Valkan, I almost killed you!" Brynilide snapped.

"Someone removed the book, Uthra has been awoken and we have been called as the last of the Paladins we must get our people out of Holistade. This may be our chance at freedom Bryn." Valkan's Persian blue eyes were hopeful. The idea of leaving Holistade had always appealed to the dark haired boy and secretly it had appealed to her as well.

"This is foolish Valkan! You know the gates seal at night, even if we do make it through the night we would ever make it passed the damned and you know this. It is best we return the book to its home." She tried to reason with him, but could see the defiance his features.

"Someone did, and maybe if we are lucky they can help us out of this hell. Please Brynhilide. I will not leave you here, and I won't stay. So what choice have you?" Valkan said with a smug smile.

"Fine gather, the people and meet at the square if we are going to do this we need a plan."

"Already done, as I said I wasn't taking no for an answer." Valkan said turning away.

"What if I had said no?" Brynilide asked.

"I would have knocked you out." Valkan laughed as he began skipping to the town square.
