Visits of Comfort

Sometimes Brennan shows up at his apartment with Thai food and a documentary.

Sometimes she shows up with only tears in her eyes and questions he alone can answer.

Why have I been abandoned so many times?

What do people think of me?

Am I really cold and unfeeling?

And he holds her. He hugs her and soothes her; consoles her and assures her.

Sometimes she stays over, lying in bed with him but not with him. They occupy opposite sides of the bed and make a painful effort to keep it that way.

Sweets would analyze them, Booth knows. He would pick apart the touches, tears, and times they share alone in his apartment.

But Sweets will never know.

Sometimes she shows up so late it's early. She kicks off her shoes and finds solace in his arms.

He knows he should analyze this- the feelings, friendship, and flat lining of his heart every time she leaves.

But he doesn't.

Sometimes she shows up with a smile and a story.

Sometimes it isn't her needing the comfort, it's him.

He hopes she never stop these visits. He hopes she will never turn to anyone else for the comfort he provides. But most of all, he hopes that one night when she stays, they won't try so hard to keep the distance that separates them in his bed.
