Authors Notes: Hello lovely fanfiction readers! This is a sequel to my story, 'A twist in time'. If you have not read it, please do, as this story will be very confusing otherwise! So, I wanted to let you guys know a couple of things about this story before you read it. It is very different than my last story in that I explore more than just Mamoru's point of view. It will be limited to Usagi, Mamoru and Chibiusa though!
I'm going to be completely honest with you guys and tell you that the Dark Moon arc is my least favorite Sailor Moon arc. Please don't hate me for saying this, but I hated anime Chibi-Usa. She was redeemed for me in the crystal version a little bit but to find out she is 900-something years old? That did not sit well with me. The whole Mamoru-Dark Lady kiss? Also did not sit well with me.
I had originally planned to skip this whole arc altogether. It's seriously complicated, time-traveling, bratty kid, plot holed messed-uppery. Too daunting, I thought! Then I decided that the whole point of fanfiction is to change the things I did not like and make it my own! SO, forget everything you know about Chibi-Usa, the Dark Moon Clan and the original Sailor Moon story. I took it, twisted it, rewrote it and made it my own! I only hope you guys enjoy the crazy story that was bouncing around in my head as much as I enjoyed writing it!
(Also, because I feel like this might come up, I purposely made Chibi-Usas eyes blue. I know they are supposed to be red, but I changed it. Why? Because it's fanfiction. and I can. )
A huge shoutout to the best beta ever: thank you Sailor Saiyan007! Your encouragement makes writing worth it!
Disclaimer: The wondrous, magical, world that is Sailor Moon does not, nor will it ever, belong to me. Although I have taken liberties with the characters, they do not, nor will they ever, belong to me!
If you guys like this, please let me know! I mean seriously, reviews make me want to write!
Prologue
The pink-haired, teenage girl sighed mournfully as she pressed delicate hands against the crystal coffin that was currently housing her mothers sleeping figure. She tried to swallow the devastated sob that lodged in her throat but she was not successful as it burst from her pink, rosy, lips and echoed around her. She wished, not for the first time, that she could talk to her. She just wanted to hear her reassuring voice one more time or have some kind of indication that her mother was still alive in there.
The hot tears poured down her cheeks and she wiped them away angrily. This was why she couldn't wield the Silver Crystal. She was too emotional and too weak; nothing like the beautiful Queen that currently lay immobile in front of her.
"Chibi-Usa?" She swiveled around towards the source of the tentative voice that had pierced through her miserable musings.
Her very best friend, Jimu, stood with his arms crossed, his emerald green eyes widened with concern for her. She was very grateful that Jimu was also immune to the poisonous gas that had killed most of the inhabitants of Crystal Tokyo and had, despite their best efforts to fight, put all their of their loved ones into a coma. Another flash of sorrow coursed through her at the thought. She understood Jimu's immunity, but why her? Even their best friend Lita, who was much stronger than she was, had fallen comatose.
If she could just use the Silver Crystal, like her mother had several times against this enemy, she could destroy them for good and wake her family and friends up.
"Hey, I'm sorry. I'm just feeling sorry for myself. Is Endy awake?" she asked softly, forcing a watery smile onto her lips in an effort to reassure her friend.
"No, he's still sleeping," Jimu responded, his voice deathly quiet and his stare serious, a look he had most definitely inherited from his father. "Chibi- do you want to practice using the Crystal some more before your brother wakes up? Will that make you feel better?" he asked softly, eager to help her in any way that he could.
Chibi-Usa gave him a small, forced smile and inwardly cursed as her eyes began to well up with tears again. She hated being so emotional. Why couldn't she be strong and resolute just like her mom?
They were all alone now. It was just her, Jimu, and her baby brother Endy. Her mother had managed to encase them all protectively in the crystal palace when the Black Moon Clan had attacked with a power stronger than they had ever possessed before. This awful enemy that her family, the rulers of Crystal Tokyo, had been battling for years. They had always been strong enough to keep these enemies at bay, but this time, it was her fault that they had failed.
The tears fell from her blue eyes and rolled down her cheeks in torrential waves of sorrow. Jimu automatically pulled her into his arms, soothingly running his hands in circles on her back in an attempt to comfort her. She buried her head against his chest, her eyes clenched shut, furious that she couldn't stop this onslaught of emotion. She hated that he had to see her like this.
"It's going to be okay Chibi-Usa. We'll figure this out," he whispered gently, tightening his arms around her. She sniffled pathetically in the circle of his arms as her tears soaked the front of his shirt. Her friend should be angry with her; she was the reason his parents were comatose on cement slabs as well.
"It's all my fault Jimu. I'm so pathetic. If I hadn't taken the Crystal that day in an attempt to prove that I could use it, my mom would have been able to fight them off when they came," she choked on the words, devastated by the painful truth in them. "She was already so tired. Endy kept her up all night and Dad couldn't do it by himself. What if…" The sentence trailed off, all tangled up in her throat that was constricted and choking with guilt.
Jimu growled with irritation as he gently pushed her away so that he could look into her face. His eyes were narrowed angrily and his jaw clenched tightly. Chibi-Usa hiccuped miserably at the look; it was about time he was angry with her for what she had done. She should have known her friend would never blame her.
"Stop that, Chibi. How the hell were you supposed to know that they were going to attack? My dad said that they had definitely sealed them away last time. It was over; they shouldn't have been able to escape," he said, his voice firm. "Don't ever say that you're pathetic. Come on, Chibi-Usa, don't put yourself down. You're better than that."
He was right; she knew he was. This was not the time to feel sorry for herself. She needed to practice so that she could leave the crystal palace that was currently protecting them and fight the monsters lurking out there. She was able to transform into Chibi Moon, so if anything did happen, she could protect them that way at least.
It was like the Black Moon Clan had read her thoughts as the resounding sound of the alarm that Jimu had rigged in the control room began to wail loudly throughout the castle. There was something infiltrating the barrier protecting them.
She inhaled sharply and her eyes shot up to meet Jimu's gaze. His eyes must have mirrored her own: startled and filled with terror.
"Jimu! You go get Endy while I find out what's going on!" she cried over the sound of the ominous siren, her voice laced with terror as the urgency bubbled up in her chest. She could tell by the uncertain look in his eyes that he didn't want to leave her to look into this on her own, but he knew that they needed to protect her brother.
His hands lingered on her shoulders for a moment longer, his gaze filled with fear and concern for her. "Chibi.." he choked on the words and she nodded. She understood what he was trying to say. She gave him a tender smile that she hoped would reassure him. She could do this but only if he believed in her. He visibly gulped and nodded firmly, a tuft of raven black hair falling softly onto his forehead with the movement.
"It's okay, Jimu. I'll be okay," she whispered and gently pulled away from him. He gave her one last look before he swiveled around and raced towards where her one-year old brother was sleeping.
She wasn't going to lie, not even to herself. She was scared, like really scared, and the very last thing that she wanted to do was run towards the danger. She had never had to fight before. She'd lived a happy but sheltered life where she'd been lovingly doted on by her friends, her mother's Senshi, her father's generals and her parents, whom she adored. There had never been a reason to fight with such a vast array of super soldiers protecting her and the continuous wailing of the siren reminded her that she was very much out of her depth right now.
It didn't take long to transform into Chibi-Moon as she sailed through the hallway, her pink boots clicking loudly along the shining marble floors as she ran towards the control room. Her heart was racing and she was panting in terror as her eyes scanned along the screen to find where the infiltration was located.
It felt surreal to see the blinking little light on the Northwest part of the crystal barrier. How could something as innocent as a little blinking light indicate something as awful as an invasion by the monsters that had effectively taken down her entire family? She could feel her hands trembling as her fingers fumbled over the buttons of the console to determine the exact location.
She bit her lower lip in an effort to stop its involuntary quivering from the onslaught of tears that were once again threatening to pour out of her eyes.
"You're strong, my beautiful daughter. Please don't be so hard on yourself, Small Lady. Your power will come in time. I promise you it will."
The memory of her mother's advice resonated through her mind; her beautiful, powerful mother that was currently locked away in a crystal coffin. She needed to save them. She exhaled deeply, clutching the Silver Crystal on a chain around her neck, pulling from within strength that she didn't know she had, and took off with firm resolve towards the danger to fight for her family.
There was nothing here. She'd searched everywhere and there wasn't any indication that anyone or anything had tried to infiltrate the barrier into the Crystal palace. She'd checked several times and it was still impenetrable from anyone that wanted to do them harm.
Her eyes scanned the horizon and her heart clenched painfully at the sight of the destruction. The land that had been teeming with life was now barren. A desert-like landscape filled with desolation and death. Her home was destroyed and the only means to restore it was hanging uselessly around her neck. Her vision blurred with tears as she gulped pitifully. She missed her mom and dad.
"There you are, little rabbit." The voice was dark and menacing and she gasped as she swivelled around towards its source. The leader of the Black Moon Clan, Prince Demande, stood tall and effectively blocked her from re-entering through the safety of the protective barrier that he could not breach.
She gasped in horror; he was terrifying to look upon, white gleaming hair, clenched jaw, towering figure and black ominous eyes. God, she was in so much trouble. In her terror, she didn't even think to attack him -she was Chibi-Moon after all- until it was too late.
He strode towards her with lightning fast speed, and before she could react, he'd wrapped his hand around her neck lifting her high into the air. It was painful and she could feel her breath being choked out of her, her eyes watering as she desperately tried to pry his fingers off of her. Her legs kicking furiously, slicing fruitlessly through the air.
"You little brat, you think that you can evade me? You are nothing but an insignificant child. How someone like the Queen could have produced such an offspring is beyond me." His words were cruel and they reflected the insecurities that she had often struggled with. "Where is the boy?" he demanded and slightly loosened his grip on her throat. She gasped, greedily sucking through some air through her lips that were beginning to turn blue. She knew what he wanted.
He wanted Endy.
She had inherited the silvery energy that enabled her to become a Senshi and wield the Silver Crystal from her mom, but Endy was special. He had a mixture of both their mothers silvery essence and their dad's gleaming golden power. At only one, her brother had already exhibited incredible amounts of power and the Dark Moon Clan wanted it for their own.
When the attack first happened, she'd overheard their weapons expert and military leader, Ash, talking about dissecting him and utilizing him to build weapons. It filled her with revulsion and disgust. She could never let these monsters touch her baby brother.
"You'll never have him," she croaked painfully and his grip tightened again as he brought her face inches from his and she cringed at the hatred in the pools of his eyes.
"If I can't have him, then I'll make sure he ceases to exist. Just like you, little rabbit. I'm going to go back and kill your entire family so that this unnatural abomination you've created here will never exist," the tears began to roll down her cheeks at the pure malice in his voice. His lips spread out into an evil smile and her stomach churned as his hot breath fanned across her face.
"Do you know what I'm going to do after that, little rabbit? I'm going to take your mother away. I'm going to force her to submit to me, and we will rule the Black Moon Kingdom together. Our children will supercede you and your brother in every single way."
She did gag then, at the awful images the monster was evoking in her mind. No! Why wasn't she strong enough? She choked as his fingers pressed harder into the skin of her neck. She was going to die. She only hoped that Jimu could find a way to protect Endy. Her poor baby brother. The edges of her vision were going black as she fought against the beckoning call of darkness.
"Chibi-Usa!" She knew the voice belonged to Jimu and she gasped as he barreled into Demande, sending them tumbling to the ground. The white-haired prince was momentarily distracted and they were provided enough time for Jimu to yank on her arm and pull her through the golden barrier, just beyond the monster's reach.
She gasped, her neck pulsating painfully from the brutal assault. She couldn't breathe, the air like fire in her lungs. Demande's awful threats ricocheted through her mind. Oh God. Oh, God.
She burst into sobs then as Jimu pulled her into his arms.
"Chibi, it's okay. You're okay," he murmured soothingly, but she could hear the catch of emotion in his voice and felt the way his hand trembled as he gently rubbed her back in a calming manner.
"Jimu. Oh God. We're doomed, Jimu." she whispered, her throat still painfully raw.
Jimu smoothed back the pink hair that had fallen into her face from the scuffle to peer questioningly into her eyes.
"What do you mean, Chibi?" He inquired, his voice filled with tender concern as his eyes narrowed in confusion.
"Demande, he told me, Jimu. They're going to go back in time. They're going to kill our family," she gasped, choking desperately on her anguish. Demande's awful statements pierced through her. Jimu's arms tightened around her and she heard his sharp intake of breath. They had witnessed the Dark Moon Clan's power. They knew what they could do.
"Why would he tell you that?" Jimu's voice was strained, the words strangled and terrified as he spoke them. Chibi-Usa replayed the awful moment in her mind and she closed her eyes, pressing her forehead to Jimu's chest miserably. She could feel his heart racing frantically against her. He was afraid too.
"He was going to kill me, that's why," she whispered softly, the sound barely audible. Jimu heard it and the resulting growl of anger rumbled through his chest beneath her. She pulled away from him, her eyes sad as she looked up at him. "Jimu, what are we going to do? We can't just wait to die," She croaked hopelessly.
She watched as Jimu's jaw clenched and his eyes, that had been wide with terror, suddenly narrowed in cool contemplation. He frowned softly and she knew that he was concocting a resolution to their current predicament. He looked so much like his father when he did that. The resemblance was so uncanny that it sent another flash of sorrow through her as she thought of her father's general that was currently lying comatose with the others.
"I know what we have to do Chibi," he whispered. "We need to take Endy and go back too. If we destroy the Dark Moon Clan, their hold on our parents here will lessen and we can save them." She shook her head in confusion, her pink tresses, so similar to her moms, tumbling over her shoulders with the movement.
"What do you mean? How?" she questioned and inhaled sharply at the look of hope unfurling on her friend's face.
"Who better to destroy the Dark Moon Clan and protect Endy than our parents themselves? They are already going there! We can warn them, Chibi-Usa, and then they can save us!" Jimu exclaimed and Chibi-Usa's eyes widened as she understood what he meant.
"Pluto will never agree to let us through, Jimu. It's breaking all the rules!" she whispered harshly, not daring to allow herself the luxury of hope. She fell slightly as Jimu jumped to his feet, excitedly grasping her arm and pulling her up with him.
"Come on, Chibi! Nobody can turn down a request when you look at them with those pretty blue eyes! If anyone can convince her, you can," he exclaimed, his hands clasping her shoulders, his green eyes bright with eagerness. She tilted her head as she considered their options. Her first option was to stay here, within the safety of the barrier. They'd be safe, unless the Black Moon Clan killed her dad in the past and effectively wiped her and Endy from existence. The second option was that they could take Endy, convince Pluto to let them travel, and they could fight with her mom and dad in the past.
Endy's wail of displeasure echoed around them and she knew what option she preferred. She wasn't strong enough to do this on her own. She'd heard the stories of her mom and what she had been like as the Moon Senshi, the battles she'd fought and won, the way she and her dad had always triumphed over evil.
Her mom had stopped battling as the Moon Senshi just before she was born and the thought of actually seeing her in action filled Chibi-Usa with excitement.
Demande's disgusting words echoed through her mind once again and the excitement faltered at the things he'd said about her mother; she needed to warn them.
Jimu pulled her hand and led her to where her brother sat, gumming on the little blue blanket that was now tangled around his little legs. His blue eyes, so much like their father's, brightened at the sight of her.
"Chibi!" he cried with tiny, outstretched arms, reaching for her as he leaned forward. Her heart expanded at the sight of her black-haired baby brother and she tenderly lifted him into her arms, propping him on her hip as he pulled at her hair and giggled happily.
"Ouch, Endy, careful baby boy, don't pull Chibi's hair," she cooed gently and smiled as the little boy grinned at her. She kissed him softly on the head and turned to meet Jimu's gaze. His eyes were soft, with a small smile on his lips as he watched her with her brother.
She nodded wordlessly and Jimu understood. They needed to take their chances with Pluto; for their parents and baby Endy's sake.
"Absolutely not, Chibi-Usa. It is simply out of the question!" Pluto's voice pierced firmly through the swirling mists of time around them.
They stood in front of the green-haired, regal Senshi of Time within the confines of Chronos's Time Gate. As the gatekeeper of space and time, it was Pluto's lonely responsibility to ensure that none who would misuse time could pass through here.
She readjusted a sleeping Endy in her arms and bit her lip nervously as she gazed pleadingly at the Senshi that was her oldest friend. How could she make her understand that this was absolutely necessary?
"Please Pluto, you don't understand, we have to go. It isn't safe here for us anymore and the Dark Moon Clan might have already traveled back. We have to stop them," she whispered hoarsely, wishing she had some of her dad's healing energy to soothe the ache in her throat from Demande's brutal attack. Jimu stood protectively behind her, wisely remaining silent as she spoke with the Senshi.
"Chibi-Usa, do you know what could happen if you went back? You could destroy everything," she said harshly, her lips set in a brutally grim line. This was so frustrating. Didn't Pluto understand that everything was already at risk of being destroyed?
"Pluto, can you please listen to me? If we stay here, we'll die. Don't you know what's happened out there?" she choked in desperation, tears welling in the pools of her eyes. They quietly rolled down her cheeks and Chibi-Usa growled as she furiously wiped the offending wetness away. She hated that she was so irritatingly emotional!
Pluto's harsh gaze softened as she stared at her broken hearted friend. Chibi-Usa could see her considering their request, her eyes flashing with uncertainty as she fiddled with the long silver staff in the palm of her gloved hand.
"Pluto, I need you to help me save my family." She knew that her final desperate plea clinched it as Pluto sighed and closed her eyes silently for a moment, her face upturned, as if praying for patience. When she opened them again Chibi-Usa knew she'd been successful.
"Tell them only enough to warn them, Chibi-Usa." Pluto demanded, her tone ominously dark with warning. "The less that they know of their future, the more likely it is that the timeline will remain intact," she said and Chibi-Usa could have wept with relief.
The Senshi of Time reached down and unclasped a time key from her belt, gingerly pressing it into the pink-haired princess's palm.
"If you are anything like your father, I know that you will accomplish everything you set out to do. Let's hope you don't make as much of a mess as he did though, okay?" Pluto stated, her voice slightly tinged with exasperation and Chibi-Usa frowned in confusion. "Tread carefully, Chibi-Usa. This is a dangerous thing you're doing; time is not meant to be meddled with," she deadpanned, her gaze intensely piercing as she stared into Chibi-Usa's eyes.
Chibi-Usa gulped as her body trembled in fear of what they now must do. She felt Jimu's hand press comfortingly into the small of her back. His presence was warm, soothing, and she drew strength from it. She nodded mutely to the Senshi.
"Use Luna-P to find your parents when you get there, it's powers will help you," she said, referring to the mechanical, slightly magical, Luna robot ball that she'd had made for Chibu-Usa when she was only a small child.
"Go now, Small Lady, and good luck." Pluto's voice resonated across the mists of time as she held Endy in one arm and Jimu's hand in the other. She was proud of herself, for she managed not to cry as she let the mist envelop them.
