It was summer and the fields were void of anything living. Workers toiled in a seemingly endless battle against the infertile ground as sweat dripped down the backs of their necks, only to be stolen by the heat in minutes. The angry sun beat down its heat in vicious waves, sending the playing children under trees and canopies, hoping for a little shade.

Two such children sat beneath the oak in their garden. The pair were twins and identical in almost every way. The only way most people could tell the two apart was their hair or clothes. The brother, older by a few minutes, was very protective of his sister, even at the tender age of six. He was defiant and often found himself in trouble for talking back to the carers that watched over him and his sister. The sister, however, was different in that respect. She was already graceful and elegant, taking an interest in the things around her and took a great delight in telling her brother off for the various things he did. No matter how much she would wag her finger though, she would always love him dearly.

The girl laughed at her brother's antics, standing upon his head or performing cartwheels, despite the heat. He was always trying to impress her, trying to make her come out of her shell and, for just once, stop acting grown-up. He tugged on her hair to make her stand up and then, taking hold of her hands, began to run at full pelt across the garden. Together they zigzagged between trees and bushes, ran through the flower beds and up the steps to their house. Their light laughter and carefree giggles echoed through the stagnant air.

Once they'd reached the doors of their home, people surrounded them both. Used to this, neither of the twins did anything to avoid the onslaught of hands that were set on dragging the two in separate directions. Both wanted to spend more of their precious time together but it wasn't possible. She was being groomed to be the heir to the throne, and he was her page in the making. Not that they knew that. They were too young, too naïve to know the complications in their lives.

So instead they muddled through the days, making the most of the time they could snatch together. They spent it climbing trees and paddling in the stream by their garden. They would catch butterflies in the meadow at spring and occasionally, if the carers would allow them, take trips to the harbour. It wasn't much, but Len and Rin Kagamine couldn't care less. It was their time and that was what mattered.

And so starts the tale of whom most people called the Princess of Evil. It is not a simple story and is certainly no fairytale in which everyone finds their happy ending. However, if you care to read on, be wary and remember that there are two sides to everything.

A/N: The prologue of my new chaptered fic. My take on 'The Princess of Evil' story. It will most likely involve the pairings LenXRin and KaitoXMiku but warnings will appear when necessary. Until then it'll be friendship and family.

I hope that you enjoy reading it as much as I like writing it. However, I'll warn you that I'm not a speedy updater and only write when I feel like it. Sometimes a bolt of inspiration will hit me and I'll want to write a whole chapter in one go, other times I simply don't want to. This is totally normal for me and doesn't mean I've abandoned the fic completely.
