summary: Sam's thoughts on the way to Rivendell
Author's notes: This is my first attempt ever at a LOTR fic. Also I took the writer's liberty of giving them horses.
Samwise Gangee had never been more tired in his life. But they couldn't stop to rest. It was still a two day ride to Rivendell and the recs were still on they're trail.
Sam slumped forward on his mount as he thought of what waited for them in the elf city. Arwen had got word back to Aragon that she and Frodo had reached the safety of the elf world but there had been no further details.
Sam blinked back tears. He felt as if he had failed Frodo. Gandalf had made him promise to stick by Frodo's side and Sam hadn't been able to full fill that simple task. Frodo was dying and it was his fault.
Aragon pulled up on the reigns of his horse and slowed the group to a halt. He turned his head to look back at the group of Hobbits.
"We'll make camp here for tonight."
Sam's head snapped up his eyes flashing with anger. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. "We're stopping? There's only a day's ride left to Rivendell......if we go straight through we can be there by midday."
Aragon ignored the halfling's anger as he dismounted and began to remove the horses' saddle. "The horses are exhausted. They need to rest for a good six hours before we can move. Don't worry, Sam, Frodo is in the best hands possible."
/He could die before we get there./Sam thought bleakly but chose not to voice those thoughts as he looked back at Merry and Pippin. He could see his worry mirrored in their eyes.
With the sun sinking slowly below the horizon camp was quickly assembled and a cozy fire was burning.
From his position to the left of the fire Aragon watched Sam with concern. The normally jovial hobbit was sitting as far away from the fire as possible, his back to a tree. The hobbit had his knees pulled up to his chest and was watching the stars as they appeared. But Aragon knew Sam's mind was miles away, with Frodo in Rivendell.
Merry and Pippen's usual banter was subdued as they prepared dinner and later a snack. Both tried to get Sam to eat something but Samwise refused both times. Giving up on drawing their friend out of his dark mood Merry and Pippen retreated to the right side of the fire and sat across from Aragaon.
Sam shifted his gaze away from the stars and back to his friends. He appreciated what they were trying to do he really did. But more than anything Sam did not want to be where he was. He and Frodo had known each other for most of their lives and had never been seperated for this long.
Sam needed to be with his friend......no.....he needed to be with his brother. They were brothers in every since that mattered and Sam had betrayed that.
Sam rested his head on his knees. He wanted to see Frodo. Sam knew Frodo didn't blame him but Sam felt the need to apoligize for his failure. But he couldn't because he was stuck here.
Hours later Aragon doused the fire with water so only glowing embers remained.
"Sam, take first watch."
The Ranger curled up on his bedroll and drifted to sleep. Merry and Pippen talked quietly for a little while longer before they too fell asleep.
Sam leaned back against the tree trunk but his thoughts remained active not allowing sleep to come. When dawn broke the horizon Sam was still awake, watching the sky.
