Jamie Ross tried to hail a cab despite the tightly packed streets surrounding the courthouse. Finally spotting one, she reached the yellow cab at the same time as a tall, distinguished-looking man. Feeling generous after her victory in court, she offered to share the cab, as they were both going uptown. During the cab ride, the two passengers snuck silent glances at each other. When the cab pulled up outside of the man's building, he paid the cabbie for his share of the ride. In the remaining journey, she felt inexplicably bereft with the absence of the grey-haired man's presence.
