A/N So I just saw Clueless the movie for the first time a week ago and totally fell in love with it. The Cher from the movie is so much funnier than the one in the TV show. Anyway, so I was really inspired and have a bunch of unconnected short fics that I thought I'd just post up because I haven't put anything up in years, lol. It's not fantastic, but I liked it enough to post it. I apologize for the title (which I really don't like, but it's the best one I could think) and for any grammar mistakes. I hope anyone who is reading this likes it! Review please!
Disclaimer: Don't own Clueless or any part of it. Would love to meet Paul Rudd though...
Observations of an Overprotective Father
Mel wearily ran a hand through his hair as he walked up the steps to his front door. This lawsuit had been taking up a ridiculous amount of his time. It was the third night this week he was coming home late, and he couldn't even remember the last time he had dinner with Cher. Resolving to make it up to her as soon as it was over, he unlocked the door and stepped in. "Cher? I'm home."
No answer.
Strange, he thought. Cher always came running when he called, unless she was out, and she had already told him that she was going to stay in tonight. It was too early for her to be asleep.
"Cher? You home?"
The sound of the TV had him moving toward the den.
"Honey, why-?"
He cut himself off at the door.
There was his daughter, asleep on the couch, while Ren and Stimpy played on the screen. What had him surprised was the fact that she was wrapped up in the arms of his former stepson.
"Well, I'll be…" he muttered. "The kid finally did it."
Mel knew about Josh's feelings for Cher, probably before the kid himself did. He couldn't blame him. After all, his daughter was the most beautiful, sweetest girl in the world. Of course Josh couldn't help but be crazy about her. And he was as transparent as a window about it. Mel just never thought he'd get up the guts to actually tell her.
People would talk, of course. Josh was in college, and Cher was still in high school. There was also the small matter of their previous connection. There may have been no blood relation, but facts never stopped gossip.
He took another peek at the pair, noticing the content look on both young faces. They looked good together, he decided. He didn't have to worry with Josh. He was smart and responsible. He would take care of his girl, help her grow up a little. Even in her sleep, Cher looked happy, and there was nothing more any father ever wanted for his daughter. To hell with everyone else.
He watched quietly as Josh shifted, eyes opening. The boy smiled slowly at the sight of the girl in his arms, reaching up to smooth her hair. She stirred at the motion, blinking up at him.
"Did I wake you?" he whispered.
"Mmm…it's okay. You're a good pillow."
He laughed softly. "You always this coherent when you wake up?"
"That's when I come up with most of my works of genius." She yawned.
"Go back to sleep."
Her eyes were already closed. "Okay…good night…don't go anywhere"
A smile lingered on his lips. "Wouldn't dream of it." He rested his head against hers and closed his eyes.
Mel let a rare grin cross across his face as he slipped out of the room.
Yes, Josh would be good for his daughter.
But, he smirked, walking up the stairs tugging at his tie, that didn't mean he wouldn't pull out the 45 and shovel.
