A/N: I just started watching Fairy Tail, but after watching the episode "Just do whatever" I thought of this idea. I hope it's alright for my first try at writing for Fairy Tail and you like it :)
When Erza found Lucy and Happy after their fight with Sherry her first thought was why Gray wasn't with them, so she immediately asked where he was. The reason why she wanted to see Gray wasn't because she thought that he would know where Natsu was, but because she was worried. The master had told her that Gray was on the way to bring back the three from the S-class mission and Erza knew that he was just as determined as she was. So what could have happened to him?
The moment she found out that Gray had joined the three on the mission, she was disappointed and even more so when she learned that he wanted to complete this mission. However the moment he took a hold of her sword, that was pointed right at his Fairy Tail symbol, and looked into her eyes, she knew that something must have happened.
Until this moment Erza had been determined to bring them all back without finishing the mission, but everything changed when she saw the look in Gray's eyes. They didn't need words, they spoke with their eyes like they had done so many times before. The look in Gray's deep eyes made Erza realize that he needed to finish this mission no matter what and she understood.
Gray had always been there for her. He had seen her at her weakest and he hadn't judge her for it, if anything they grew closer after he had found her crying that fateful day at the river. He was the most important person in her life and even though she had found great friends in Natsu and now Lucy, Gray was still her best friend.
They had never spoken about their pasts, but Erza knew the look in Gray's eyes, it was the same one she got when she thought about her past. This mission had something to do with it and there was no doubt in Erza's mind that it was important to Gray, after all he normally didn't stand up to her.
Normally Erza hated people breaking the rules or arguing with her, but this was different. Gray was her best friend and she cared deeply for him. If she was completely honest with herself he mean even more to her. There were very few people who could change her mind when she was set on doing something, but he was one of them. With no one else she would be willing to break the rules, but for him she would do it.
After his words she lowered her sword and when he turned around she clenched her beloved weapon harder. She would support him and be there if he needed her, just like he had been there for her so many years ago. She cared deeply for him and if this was what he had to do to come to terms with his past then she would be by his side the whole way.
With her mind made up she turned to Lucy and Happy and freed them from their bonds. Of course they all were to face the master and had to answer to him, but now only this mission was important, or in Erza's case, her best friend Gray.
