Men's Pants
If asked, Meredith would say that Addison is definitely the man of their relationship.
She isn't asked this often, actually Meredith isn't sure she has been asked this, but if she was, well Addison is her choice. Because Addison is the one who has the better paying job, Addison is the one who's more financially stable, Addison is the one who sends the flowers and chocolates, and Addison is the one who, on occasion, wears a strap on.
Meredith is the one who is wooed senseless, Meredith is the one who wants to hug and cuddle, Meredith is the one who leans up to kiss her partner, Meredith is the one who prefers not to put her mouth anywhere near someone's vagina regardless of if it's Addison's or not.
If asked, Addison would say that Meredith wears the pants in their relationship.
Not that anyone would dare ask, but if they did, well, Meredith is her choice. Because Meredith actually owns more pants then she does shirts, and Meredith is the one who always messes up what she means in a conversation, Meredith is the one who needs help to talk about her emotions, and Meredith is the one who sleeps in the spare room during a fight.
Addison is the one who shops until the day is out, Addison is the one who will remember the anniversary of their first kiss, Addison is the one who wishes they went out more, and Addison is the one going insane because Meredith doesn't have opinions about their wedding.
If asked, Derek would say that there wasn't a man, that neither of them wore the pants; their relationship was just two women who loved each other.
He was asked this question, by each of them individually, and by Mark, though he told his friend nothing of the matter. Derek has been with them both, lived with them both, loved them both and he knows the both inside out.
He knows Meredith has a soft side, that Meredith has the needs and the emotions of any woman. He knows that Addison can be dominating, that she likes to control things and likes to shower her partner in love. He knows Meredith hates to shop and would never wear pink no matter what you did. He knows that Addison takes forever to get ready and calls half an hour in the shower 'quick'.
He knows these to women and he knows how well they fit together. And so now, at the wedding he knows Meredith didn't want live through, the wedding he knows Addison stressed over for a year, the wedding where Meredith is having the best time of her life, and the wedding Addison is thinking might have been a waste of time and money, at this wedding that's married the two women he's loved so much and lost in so much pain, he knows why they choose him as their best man.
And so he shares this, he's thoughts on them both, as he makes his speech and embarrasses the newlyweds. He tells the guests of Addison's girly habits, and Meredith's manly traits. He tells them of how Addison is a very big pants wearer in any relationship, even if the pants are $300 Dolce and Gabbana jeans. He speaks of Meredith's secret love for flowers and summer dresses, even though she only owns two dresses, one of which she's wearing now.
Meredith and Addison grin at his speech. His words on them both are true and as the couple hold hands and share a quick kiss they both smile and think that maybe he's right. Maybe there is no man. Maybe there are no pants. And with a laugh they realise, hell, they can live with that.
