CHAPTER ONE- SNIP

Avalon sat on the bathroom counter in orange and blue pajamas. Her waist-length, shiny black hair cascaded loosely down her back. She gripped a pair of scissors in her hand and let them meet her hair.

The lock of hair slipped out from under the blade and fell to the ground.

Avalon was nearly eleven. She lived in a small house at the end of a long, winding road lined with oak trees. Her parents had moved to Europe from China when they were kids, and they had traveled from one home to another Avalon's entire life, before finally settling down in the U.K. earlier that summer.

Her family never stayed in one place for more than a year. She'd lived in Ireland, Malta, and even spent a few months in Florida while her dad was searching for a job.

Avalon didn't have any friends. At school, she was the only Asian kid (apart from her brother, Yun, but he was only in kindergarten). The other students gaped at her glossy black hair and her almond-shaped brown eyes, calling her names like 'squint-face'.

Avalon was too shy to tell any of the teachers.

The last lock of long hair joined the rest on the cool tiles of the bathroom floor, and Avalon stared at her reflection in the mirror. Her once beautiful, long hair, was now cut unevenly above her shoulders, darkening her Chinese complexion and sharpening her features. She turned off the light and crept into her bed.
