Beca haunted him as he tried to sleep. He saw her face when she stood next to the taxi and he sang to her.
He heard her voice when he first saw her sing at the auditions.
"Of course you're here right now. I don't need your help!"
"You have juice pouches and Rocky!"
"I'm the only one here." "I didn't ask you to be."
He turned onto his side.
"You think I'm mad at you because you yelled at me? ...You don't understand…"
They had won the riff-off. The girls stormed off, dejected, and they cheered. He watched Beca as they walked away.
Despite the fact that they had lost, she was the only one who looked elated. He knew how she felt: no matter who had won, it was fun and that should be the point.
She seemed to be arguing with Aubrey when he saw her clutch her stomach.
Suddenly his hearing focused and he could hear her gasping for breath.
She wrapped both arms around her middle and bent over.
"Beca?" asked some of the girls around her.
He rushed over but it was as if he was running through honey. He just couldn't get there fast enough.
She was on the ground, curled into a fetal position. She let out a blood-curdling scream. She was in agony. Tears streamed down her face, leaving tracks of mascara.
He was almost there. Almost by her side when the rest of the girls blocked his path.
Their expressions were malicious and their eyes bored into him.
"She doesn't need you," they hissed at him, "No one needs you. She's better off without you."
He backed away, trying to get a glimpse at Beca through them but he couldn't.
Suddenly, the scene changed.
He was looking at Beca through a glass window. On the other side, she was on a doctor's table, motionless in nothing but a bra and underwear.
Doctors were crowding around her and a heart monitor beeped erratically.
The doctors were pulling out scalpels and knives, the glaring light reflecting off their sharp blades.
He pounded on the glass, but he couldn't get in.
Suddenly, someone stormed in and tossed the doctors aside.
It was Luke, their boss from the radio station.
Beca sat up and wrapped her legs around him and they kissed passionately.
He picked her up, her legs still around him, and spun around.
He pressed her back into the glass in front of him. She hadn't seen him.
Luke looked at him as Beca pressed kisses on his neck.
"You don't deserve her," Luke growled at him.
Jesse shot up, sweating and breathing hard.
The feeling of the nightmare still haunted him even as he flopped back down.
Why do you push me away, Beca? He thought to himself, I love you.
