A/N: Takes place during the War, after Hagrid carries Harry's "dead" body to the crowd of peoples. Based off the movie. H/D if you squint, I guess?
For one indignant second, Draco thought that the incompetent half-giant oaf had dropped Potter's body.
Potter's impossibly limp, lifeless body.
But just as the body was about to hit the cracked cobblestone, the boy twisted in the air, landed, and scrambled to his feet, his face blemished with dirt and angry red scratches. His glasses were askew, his hair – unbelievably – more disheveled than usual; but his eyes. Despite his lack of wand and protection, his eyes were a bright and vivid green behind the grimy frames, flashing with determination and confidence and hope and life – Harry Potter is alive – in the stunned silence of the courtyard.
Draco gave himself no time for shock as he saw the one, gleaming chance to redeem himself. The one chance to prove that he could make his own decisions, that he wasn't just a mindless minion. The one chance to do something for the person he should have worked for all along.
Draco's hand tightened around the wand that once hung limply at his side. In a split second, he had made his choice. A choice that would potentially mark the stupidest, most ridiculously Gryffindor move he would ever make in his whole life.
'Well, Dumbledore,' he thought with a wry smile as he sprinted straight across the Dark Lord's disbelieving stare, 'I guess I'm not the boy who made all the wrong choices anymore, am I?'
"Potter!"
His voice strained and cracked as he threw the wand in Potter's direction. The crowd, not yet recovered from the shock of Potter's recovery from death, watched in silence as the stick spun and whistled its path through the air. It landed in their hero's surprised but grateful hands, and Potter's fist closed around the wand.
Body seized up in fear, Draco didn't dare turn back to look at the Dark Lord. He didn't need to check to know that the man's slitted glare was rapidly progressing from shock to fury and disbelief that Draco – Draco who did positively everything he was told – betrayed him. He closed his eyes, repeating feverish demands in his mind – make sure you survive, Potter, if you dare die I swear I'll kick your sorry arse back to the living world, somehow gut and throw you to the Hippogriffs to die a horribly gruesome and painful death – and awaited the inevitable Killing Curse.
The crowd exploded into shrieks and swarmed around him.
Draco whipped around to see the Dark Lord turn and scream as he aimed burst after burst of magic towards the now running Harry Potter.
And even as Lucius reached for him – was that hope behind the desperation in his eyes? – and grasped him tightly around the wrist, even as he was tugged unceremoniously through the roaring mess of a crowd towards the nearby bridge, Draco grinned.
He had finally, finally, made the right choice.
A/N: Yeah, it's a short one. But I just saw this scene that was cut from the movie online where Draco chucks a wand at Harry right in front of Voldemort's face. I had to write it out 8D
I'm hoping no one else did this already OTL If you did, I'm sorry!
Please review! I love feedback C:
