A/N: On Matilda's forum (linked on my profile), we sometimes do comment fics, where someone makes a prompt, and sets a time limit to write a story following that prompt. This prompt was Sail Boats and the time limit was 15 minutes. (come sign up if you'd like to join us!)
Written to Come Sail Away by Styx.
"Mello, Mello, Meeelllo!"
Mello blinked. Not even a moment before he had been in the lorry driving Takada and suddenly he was with Matt.
Oh fuck.
He'd just seen Matt die on the little camera. If he was with Matt now...
The blond hung his head in his hands and refused to let the tears fall. He chanced a glance at the other man with the eye on the unscarred side of his face.
"I'm sorry, Matt. I'm so sorry."
"Yeah. I'm sorry that I wasn't there to save you, Mels."
Mello looked up and saw that Matt's form was seeping into the ground. In alarm he grabbed the other's hand and they both found themselves falling, falling deeply into the center of the world, through darkness, dirt, and despair. They landed (well more like hovered over the ground) in a cavern deep within the center of the Earth. Mist covered the place as far as they could see. Before his eyes, Mello saw the ground open into a river with the spirit of Death guarding a sail boat. Souls hovered around the boat, but the bony finger of the robed creature beckoned to them.
Was it the the river styx?
"No, Mello, not that way. This way."
It was a familiar face that Mello had thought he'd been long rid of.
"Sidoh?" He whispered, unable to contain the tears any longer. The shinigami flew around and spread his wings out in their full glory before landing with a plop before the blond.
"You do not board the boat. None who use the Notebook will have the satisfaction of entering the underworld."
Mello watched in horror as Matt was dragged forcefully away. He screamed and clawed at the souls that took Matt with them, to cross the river. Matt clung to him, but Mello's spirit ceased to be spirit and he lost his grip on the redhead as his hands and body materialized into a twisted and far less human form.
"Come," Sidoh beckoned, "To the Shinigami King with you."
Thanks for reading. Also, it is rare for me to write a Matt and Mello story that has no slash. *shrugs* How did I do?
