Prologue
Fang (POV)
We had been captured. I don't really know how. I could have sworn Max was on watch and god knows she never slips up. I just don't get it.
I was mentally pacing in my cage. I would have actually physically paced but…well…cage…you know.
I didn't know where Max was either. I was the first one up. The others were still sleeping from what I could see but Max was nowhere to be found. There was an empty cage not far from here but, like I said it was empty.
I jerked my head around from the cage I had been staring at when I heard the door open. Two white coats walked in. I was pretty close to the ground and it was kinda dark so I couldn't make out their features but I could tell one was carrying something.
It was a baby! I couldn't tell if it was a boy or a girl because it was just in a little diaper and a white tee-shirt but I could tell it had wings from the bumps on its back. What did they want to make us take care of it or something? God this confused me.
The white coats walked over to the empty cage and put the baby on a blanket. The one who had carried it in was just closing the cage when the lab door opened again. This time I could tell it was a man because of the way he spoke, with a deep voice. "I just came from the Research and Development office and they said that all signs are good. Can you confirm this?"
The one handling the baby turned around and I heard a woman's voice. "See for yourself. The experiment has been converted back to its original form. It has no memory of its previous life and its physical abilities are that of the day it was created."
The new guy walked in ad went over to the cage. He looked in and I could hear the smile in his voice when he spoke, "The great Maximum Ride is born again."
