A poem, for Cress (though we've never met, so I hope this doesn't freak her out), who still managed to inspire this bit of nonsense by making the most outstanding Voyager videos. Uses some of the "Jerri Taylor Janeway back-story."

Summary: Mark Johnson moves on in melodramatic prose.

A feisty girl, eyes shooting flames, when he had seen her last,

Matured by grief; the fires banked, now, haunted by the past.

Her father dead, young swain gone too, her heart encased in chrome,

Yet, in fresh arms, she found succor —they would set up a home.

"Duty calls and I must go,

Starfleet I defend.

Within a month, I'll be your wife when I am home again."

The message, it came late one night: a-blinking on the Comm,

Her ship had vanished, all hands lost, news bursting like a bomb.

Presumed deceased by friend and State, confirmed by passing years,

Yet, he held fast, faith kept alive, words ringing in his ears.

"Duty calls and I must go,

Starfleet I defend.

My darling Mark, I'll be your wife when I am home again."

Low he' d been, weighed down with grief, when he said, "goodbye", at last,

Bereaved, bereft, his soul waxed worn, still haunted by the past.

His Kath forever to him, lost, prospects entombed in chrome,

Yet, in fresh arms, he found succor —and did set up a home.

"Duty calls and I must go,

Starfleet I defend. "

"Kathryn, my sweet, I have a wife and I exist again."

In quarter score, plus two —she returned, the Maquis in tow,

Loved unrequited, by their Chief, 'til finally he let go.

Hair shorter now, her skin too loose, woe sloping 'cross her face,

Eyes doleful, liquid with remorse —another took her place.

"Duty calls and I must go,

Starfleet I defend.

"I dreamed and dreamed, a phantom life I'll never dream again. "
