The Fighting Spirit Of Ochi.

Based upon characters in the manga and anime Hikaru no Go,by Yumi and Obata.

Here it was,the 12th Young Lions Tournament, and Shindo Hikaru 3-Dan was up against Ochi 4-Dan, in the final round.

To reach this point, Shindo had in the first round, easily disposed of Komiya-kun,who was in his last Insei year. In the second round,a lucky 1/2 point win over Touya. Round 3 saw him finally deafeat Isumi 2-Dan, and now it was time to play Ochi, in their first match since the last day of the Pro-Exam 3 years ago.

The match had started simply enough, with Shindo as white. The fuseki proceeded normally, and it seemed to be an even match between the two.

Then, what may have been a very severe overplay by Hikaru,,,3-9!! The next few plays had gone naturally, and then Ochi had a surprise....2-3 cutting at the bottom! Shindo was momentarily shaken by this taisha joseki variation.

But little by little, Ochi took the lead in the game.

Then, as things were looking bleak for Shindo, a seemingly dead pair of white stones were of use! A keima to 2-11!! No need to answer Ochi's hane at the side. Next for white a large keima to 5-12!

After a few more moves, the left seemed better for Shindo, so he turned to the right side of the board. Ochi was starting to get some thickness on the fourth line, so Shindo started to try for shape and profit on the third, eventually playing on the star point in the centre right, making an empty triangle! Ochi smiled,Shindo had made a very bad shape.....

What had though, begun to happen was a wild and brutal splitting attack by Shiundo. Move after move, Ochi's position was cracking, and Ochi strained to reverse this unhappy twist of affairs, straining so hard as to start coughing....am odd reddish substance was being coiughed up....

Soon the game got so bad that Ochi had no other choice. "I... have... lost." Thios coughing was getting worse and Ochi started weakening. Shindo was clearing the board as Ochi collapsed, coughing more and more...it was quickly realized that Ochi was coughing up his own blood!!! The post-game anaylsis was dropped as Ochi was rushed for what was to be a long hospital stay.

For those not understanding the Go terms:

fuseki--the opening of the match, where the first positions are staked out.

taisha joseki--a corner play to the 3-5 point. One of the more difficult of josekis to read right, and has several variations.

joseki--a series of correct plays in a corner.

keima--a move similar in shape to the move of a knight in Chess.

Further notes on this game...it is taken from a famous match played in 1835 between Honinbo Jowa Meijin (White) and Akobashi Intetsu 7-Dan. The sad ending is that in the real-life match, Akobashi did vomit blood, and sadly died the day after the match ended aged 27. This game is known as the Blood Vomiting Game.
