"Albus Severus Potter!"

Albus, hearing his name, began the long, terrifying walk to the front of the Great Hall. He could feel everyone's eyes on him. The whispering- if you could call it that, it seemed so loud- echoed throughout the hall, like millions of angry mosquitoes. He could hear James and Fred making rude noises from the Gryffindor table, clearly enjoying his terror. He turned around to face the hall and sat on the stool. His shaky knees were grateful for the break.

An old, dirty hat fell over his eyes and everything went dark. He could still hear the whispers, but they were now muffled by the fabric of the Sorting Hat. It was quiet for a few dreadful seconds -Was it rejecting him? Would he have to leave Hogwarts? - But then it began to talk to him.

"Well, well, well. This seems very familiar." The hat gave a dry chuckle. "My, you are remarkably like your father." Albus groaned inwardly, couldn't anyone ever look at him without seeing his father? "You know boy, I will always stand by what I said to your father; he would have done great in Slytherin." Albus gulped, anything but Slytherin.

"Funny, your father thought the same thing when I sorted him." The hat sighed, or at least seemed to, could a hat sigh? "He did manage to do good in Gryffindor, but Slytherin… Slytherin would have fitted him so well. It seems it would fit you too."

Albus though about what his father had said to him on the platform.

"Then Slytherin House will have gained an excellent student, won't it? It doesn't matter to us, Al."

It doesn't matter to us, Al.

The Sorting Hat spoke to him once more. "You would make an excellent Slytherin Albus. You're full of ambition, cunning, and determination- everything that Slytherin house takes great pride in having."

Albus felt himself nod, agreeing. The hat grew silent, seemingly satisfied. Albus knew what was coming next, and braced himself for the roar of shock that would go through the Great Hall.

The Sorting Hat opened its brim and spoke for the whole hall to hear.

"Slytherin!"
