Okay, for you people who don't know, my name is KittyKat. I'm not the most talent writer, but I've been craving to rewrite one of my oldest stories for ages now. That being Truth of Usagi. I know it's a bad name, but I was young when I wrote this for the first time. 12, 3 years later and it gets a rewrite. So, lets delve in and see if you like it...
For citizens of Tokyo, it was dark, roughly 8 or 9 at night. It was raining cats and dogs, which left the streets glistening from the faint water spills that trickled along the pebbled surfaces and pathways. There was a full moon out tonight, its light trailing into some of the darkest streets that the city processed. The light gleamed off the puddles and created rainbow surfaces, it seemed to draw the attention of a sound. The sound of tiny feet toddling and splashing through the watery street, it originated from a tiny girl, no older then 6 from the sounds, as she walked over to the puddles. Her face filled with amazement as she poked the liquid rainbow and watched as ripples caused the rainbow to vanish.
The girl's heterochromic eyes gleamed, having not expecting that sight. She placed a small bag, containing a big cartoon of milk and a small loaf of moldy bread, on the floor next to the puddle she was gazing into with her red and golden eyes. Yes, red and golden. Not natural colors for eyes to be, especially since the golden one seemed to hold a strange, almost, glow to it. She ran her hand through her luscious and long pink hair as she tried to make sense of why the liquid rainbow vanished from the water when she touched it. She sneezed lightly, through the cold and rain that caked her tiny body.
Suddenly, a noise rang into the child's ear. She looked up, a weirdly knowing look in her eyes. She pulled herself onto her bare feet and grabbed her bag, preparing to run when she got the chance. But her feet seemed chained to the ground when she was about to move, fear filling the depths of her heart. A shadow moved out of one of the nearby alleyways, what made the shadow soon appeared from the alley and took a long look at the child. He blinked before giving a toothy grin, showing a pair of fangs that dripped with crimson blood.
All sign of the child's former cheerfulness had faded into a scared demeanor, as she shook under the sight of the man. She whimpered out, grasping her head as she tried to advert her eyes from the thing that frightened her. "Go...away...," her voice, a former bell to those who heard it naturally, was shaky and rusty like it had been left unused for a long time.
The man chuckled, seemingly unfazed by the child's fears. "Chillax, I won't harm a sweet and cute babe like you," he had a eerily creepy vibe to his voice, as he gave another toothy grin. He looked deep into the child's eyes, seeing the glow that rippled through her golden eye. "So, you have the 'sight', no wonder you're able to see me as I am."
"I...I'm not scared of you," she tried to say, failing at being brave. She slowly slipped a hand over her golden eyes, ignoring the man's cries for her to stop. No longer able to see what had been in front of her, she didn't feel chained. She did a pivotal turn on her left foot before running away from the man, who was still there despite her new lack of ability to see him.
Rain trickled down her back, through her clothes. Said clothes barely held themselves together, exposing areas around her chest that if she was older would be quite embarrassing. She sneezed, grasping her hands to her shoulder in miserable attempt to warm herself up. She eventually came across a box, it had been her 'home' for the last couple of months. It was sunken in and water damaged, but it was warmer within then out in the rain. It was ruined, but the child knew she shouldn't stay out in the open. She removed her hand from her eye, which was closed now, and used her now free hands to push the box up so she could crawl within. Her legs left exposed outside of the box, but the rest of her stayed nuzzled within. She hated it, but she had nowhere else to go. Slowly, despite shivering and sneezing, she let the darkness take her into dream land. A nightmare-ish version of it, however.
A little while later, young woman Ikuko Tsukino was walking home. Holding her umbrella, she thought about how she had been caught up in a load of heavy walk in her business. She didn't like the weather that had began to occur shortly before she left, it was miserable and she just hated that. Accidents and deaths always happened in rainy or snowy weather after all, it was so coincidental. She never liked being alone in the rain, especially after sunset. Especially, since the news had been saying these terrible things recently. 'Mysterious deaths...all over the city? No cause has been found...' it had left her rather paranoid, but she couldn't do much about it at the moment.
A muffled cry hung in the air, she didn't like the sound of it and looked around. She eventually saw a box, ruined by the horrible weather. She was about the wave the cry out as something she had heard, when she saw a pair of legs emerging from the box's opening. Those legs...they were tiny and skinny. A child? The thought scared Ikuko, she didn't want any youth to be hurt after all. She moved into the alleyway, stepping cautiously towards the box. She didn't want to scare the child within and thus made no sound that could distress the young one. She gently pulled the box's droopy lid upwards to check the child for potential injuries or such that would need to be treated. None, but the child was sleeping and already in distress.
Nightmare. It was clear as day. Ikuko had to wake the pinkette soon, so she wouldn't be in anymore distress. She gently knelt down, not caring that her dress was getting wet from the water-splattered ground. She gently placed her hand on the child's shoulder and shook it, trying to avoid hurting the dreaming girl. A single, red eye shot open as a scream rippled from the child. She ripped the box as she sat up, her eyes wide as she panted. Ikuko was understandably shocked, but she gently pulled the pinkette into her eyes and rubbed her back, whispering. "Shh, it's alright, it's alright."
She could feel the little one's fright, she was being hugged by a random woman after all. But eventually, she felt the child settle down in her arms and seemed to less frightened now. She suddenly heard a raspy and weak voice that she could only assume came from the child. "Um...who are you?"
"My name is Ikuko, sweetie. I'm here to help you out, you can't stay out here. It's wet and you could end up with hypothermia," she didn't expect the child to know what the term meant, but the look of surprise on the pinkette's face indicated that she knew it meant death if left. "Before we go anywhere, I need to know what to address you by. What I'm trying to say is that I want to know your name, sweetie."
"U...Usagi..." her voice was so stutter-y, but there was a semblance of beauty in there as well. Ikuko nodded, before gently offering a hand for the child. Shyly, Usagi took it and was thus helped up.
"Alright, Usagi-chan. Let me take you to my house, it'll be warm there and you can get dry."
The two seemed awkward around each other throughout the walk to Ikuko's house, that was understandable since they didn't know one another. It was their first meeting and it was turning out like this, it was going to be rather awkward. The blue haired woman kept close eye on the child next to her, surprised by the fact Usagi never once opened her left eye. It remained shut at all times, even as they stepped towards the house. She was beginning to think that something might be wrong with it, but she didn't dare ask until they were inside and she had gotten enough trust from the child.
Upon seeing Ikuko's home, Usagi walked closer and her red eye filled with amazement. The lid of her golden eye flickered, but she kept it closed in fear of the things it allowed her to see. The house was painted white, two floors. One of the key front features was a bedroom - she believed - with a balcony. Transparent curtains fluttered in the wind, water splattering on them. Ikuko saw the open balcony door and whispered somewhat. "Damn, I forgot to close it before I left," she then turned to Usagi and said. "Lets get inside. There's no use in staying out here when you need to warm up."
With that said, she ushered the pinkette inside. She turned, placing her wet umbrella in the holder as it dripped along the floor. She got her keys out and unlocked the door before stepping out of her shoes. She smiled, but it soon turned into a frown when she realized that Usagi had no shoes to speak of. No socks either, her feet were completely barren and she had just walked with her feet like that. Usagi must have noticed where Ikuko was looking because she blushed slightly and murmured "I'm used...to it..."
"Let me see," her voice was slightly demanding, which caused a jump from the child but she nodded slightly. They walked into the living room, Ikuko sat the child on the sofa and took a look at her feet. They were bruised and slightly swollen from all the walking with bare feet, it was quite disgraceful that nobody had ever noticed the child in this much pain from lack of shoes. Now able to see the child in the light, she saw the various scraps and cuts that littered the pinkette's body as well as how ripped her clothes were. It was horrendous, how had nobody noticed this until today?
Usagi didn't like the attention she was receiving one bit and tried to cover herself up in embarrassment. Ikuko frowned, before sitting down next to the child. "I'm sorry for making you uncomfortable, it's just that you look a mess. Has anyone helped you out prior to today?" Usagi thought about it, before a slight shake left to right and back again of her head indicated her answer. She seemed so fragile, shaking like a leaf. It was almost like she would break in two like a twig if you even touched her wrong. Ikuko frowned before asking. "How long have you been alone for, Usagi?
"A...year, maybe two?" she seemed unsure of the answer herself, before continuing in a sad tone. "I lost track of time ages ago...all I know is that my birthday - the 30th of June - has passed by twice since my parents' deaths..."
"Deaths? What happened, sweetie. Do you remember?"
"Yep...I do. Clearly," Usagi answered, seeming to be very mature all of a sudden. "Ya see, my papa and mama lived in the outskirts of Tokyo. In the woods nearby, we loved it there. I tend to go bare-foot because of that, though I never realized how painful Tokyo's streets were to my feet," she paused, a few tears whelming in her eyes. She tried to wipe them, but more came anyway. "We were have a picnic, just the 3 of us. It was so peaceful...until 'they' appeared."
"They?" Ikuko asked, before apologizing for interrupting.
"It's alright..." Usagi responded, unshed tears threatening to fall. "'They' just means werewolves...I know what your going to say: 'werewolves don't exist'. That's just cause they are invisible to human eyes. Only way to see them is if your a werewolf or vampire yourself. Or, if you like me, have the gift of the 'sight'," she seemed sad at the thought of her special ability as she slowly cracked open her shimmering golden eye.
Ikuko was surprised by the gleam in the girl's now open left eye. She didn't want to ask about it, but she knew she would have to regardless. "So, the gleam in your eye indicates your 'sight'?"
"Yep," Usagi nodded, before whispering in a fragile tone of voice. "It's a very rare ability and inheritable, my ancestors created it to be able to combat against the supernatural creatures...though it only caused me and my family pain...as part of the sight is that it attracts the super natural to you, so that you could potentially be able to thus kill them."
"I see..."
"My father, he was like me. He never wanted to slay the supernatural, so we ran away from the coven. And hid, I was only a baby when we left. It was 5 years ago and I don't remember it, but heard stories. According to papa, I was the reason he left. He didn't want me to get involved in any of it..." she whimpered a little, her tears finally falling. They seemed to have been triggered by the thought of her father. "I miss him so much..."
Ikuko didn't like to see the 5 year old, so she pulled her into a comforting hug. Usagi was going to protest, but she eventually sank into the hug and began to cry quite openly. The older woman gently rubbed the pinkette's back, whispering gently. "Let it all out, it's better then bottling it all up."
She eventually realized that Usagi had cried herself to sleep, it was quite sad to see that happen to the mature child. She gently picked her up and carried her to the spare bedroom, which just so happened to be the the one that the balcony was situated onto. There was a single bed in there, with a plain cream blanket. A small white and brown patched kitten laid at the base, seemingly unfazed by the light that now trailed into the room. She gently placed the child under the covers, tucking her in. She gently reached down to kiss her forehead, before smiling. She walked over to the kitten before whispering, whilst petting him. "Night, Toto. Keep her safe."
She got a soft 'meow' in return, before the cat went back to sleep. She smiled, walking over to the door. She whispered. "Goodnight, Usagi," she gently tugged at the door and left the young one to her sleep. It had been a long night and she knew it was only the beginning, she was concerned by the pinkette and what the girl was going to do for her future. But she did know that she wanted to be there for Usagi since she needed someone for support.
Hope you enjoyed.
