Prompt: parents

Never in her life had staring at a stick been so damn scary.

They were waiting for a line, one little pink line that would tell them that their lives had changed forever.

If two lines appeared, everything would stay the same and they'd begin this whole cycle all over again.

The ovulation meters and giant circles on the calendar. The visits with the doctor in which everything remained the same. They'd been trying for over a year now and she was starting to feel like it was never going to happen.

They were determined to give it six more months…that had been four months ago. If she wasn't pregnant by August, they were going to look into other options.

Surrogates, in vitro, adoption…none of them were bad things; they just weren't what she wanted. She wanted to feel life growing inside of her, her life and Don's life together. She wanted the fairytale where their love was so strong it created a completely new life.

She dug her fingernails deeper into Don's had as the seconds ticked by in slow motion.

"I love you," he whispered into her ear, his head turning towards hers. His nose was buried in her hair and she could feel his breath against her face. It reassures and comforts her more than he could probably know.

"I know," she said softly, her hand coming up to caress his cheek, "I love you too."

"I know you want a baby, doll, and I want one too, but….if all I have in this life is you then that's more than I could ever ask for."

"But…"

"No, buts…we found each other Linds, we're together and anything else would be a blessing, but nothing is more important than you…than what we have."

She turned to him now her eyes meeting his. They were so clear, so open, so loving, "I know," she said, "If it's just the two of us forever, then I'll be thankful every day for the rest of my life."'

He leaned forward and kissed her softly, his lips staying against hers even after the timer rang.

"Okay," he said, "You ready?"

She nodded, "I am ready. I am."

He walked into the bathroom to look at the test. A moment later he came back out, his expression unreadable. He held the test out to her, and then he put his hands in the air and screamed.

She looked at the test.

iOne pink line./i

She screamed with him.
