Uhura lay in the darkness that enveloped her cabin, contemplating the thought that from that day onwards, Spock would need her strength and support more than ever, but she also knew that time would also be another main healer.
I wonder if Spocks awake she pondered whilst stretching out to grab the small clock that sat on her bedside cabinet; its bright neon display flashed 03.15am.
"Computer, is Commander Spock in his cabin?" Uhura called out while wrapping her silken dressing gown around her shorts and tank top.
"Commander Spock is presently located outside your quarters, Lieutenant" the computer responded immediately.
Her cabin doors open to reveal a tired, slightly dishevelled Spock. "Spo....." Uhura gasped.
"Nyota, I apologise for disturbing you at such an illogical hour, but I cannot sleep." He spoke softly, his head slightly bowed.
"You haven't disturbed me, my love; I couldn't sleep either to be honest. Come inside." Uhura could feel tears form as she watched Spock enter her room, with all the weight of the world on his shoulders. As he walks past, he briefly rubs his hand against hers for comfort.
"Dearest, I feel so much anger, so much hurt." Spock whispered as he stood, staring out of the nearest window into the dark abyss outside. "Do you think my mother knew I cared for her?" he reached out and placed his hand against the cool glass as if reaching out into the stars would bring her back to him.
Uhura took her place beside Spock and held her small hand over his and with her free hand, gently cupped his face, turning him to face her.
"I cannot close my eyes without seeing her face, Nyota. I failed them....I failed mother."
"Shh Spock. Your mother knew you genuinely loved her. You didn't fail; you returned to Vulcan and faced danger to save her. Don't blame yourself, dearest." Uhura purrs, allowing her fingers to comfortingly trace her lover's ears.
"But I never allowed myself to express how much I....how much I truly loved cared for her. When I close my eyes the flashbacks begin and she's standing there holding out her hand to me, calling out my name."
Uhura drew Spock closer and suddenly became aware that he stood before her with his Vulcan resolve down and for the first time in their relationship, Spock appeared as if he were a vulnerable human like herself.
"Spock, she died knowing that you loved her so very much and that you always will." Uhura softly pressed her lips against his, wanting to kiss away his fears. "What were you going to ask Jim to tell me when you were aboard the Narada?"
Spock stood momentarily looking into her deep expressionate brown eyes, brushing away a single tear that fell upon her cheek. "I wanted him to tell you.....that I would sacrifice my everything for you....to know that you would survive...would bring me peace and to also tell you that....."
Uhura felt his soft kisses once more. "and to also tell me what?" she whispered as she hugged him closely.
"That I love so dearly Nyota." Spock whispered into her ear as he stoked her long ebony coloured hair and planted even softer kisses down her neck. "You were constantly on my mind as I steered that vessel towards the Narada. You gave me hope, hope that I have scarcely felt for a very long time."
Uhura gazed out if the window and shuddered at the thought of how close she came to losing the only man she ever loved. "Promise me one thing Spock; promise me you'll never leave me."
"I will be with you always, Nyota."
