I Continue Walking

| The Beginning|

Oh, that's the bell. Shoving books into my backpack, I got up and walked out the door.

" Serena! Serena! Wait for me!"

I continue walking.

" Serena! Serena?" The voice stops.

I continue walking. Fourteen, twenty-eight, thirty-two; I spin the dial idly. Taking out my coat and CD player, I walk down the hallway. Brushing past the streams of people going in the opposite direction, I continue walking.

Oh, it's cold. I pull on my coat and walk beneath the awning.

There's my bus. I walk up the steps and find a seat. I pull on my headphones, and stare out the window.

One of us is changing.

There's a police car. Oh, look a bird.

Or maybe we've just stopped trying.

A weeping willow. Leaves swirling around the dark gravel street.

It's too late baby, now it's too late

Another yellow bus. Another unlit street lamp.

Even though we try to make it

Here's my stop. Keeping my headphones on, I walk off the bus and down the street.

Something inside of us is dying

" Hello Serena darling!"  My neighbor, watering the flowerbeds.

I can't hide it, I just can't fake it.

I continue walking.

| The Continuation|

" Serena! Hello, dear! How was school?"

I stare at her. My mother. Her smiling eyes. She's waiting anxiously. Before she could fret, I nod at her. Taking a cookie in my mouth, I walk up the stairs.

" Serena? Do you want more?"

I continue walking.

It tastes so dry. Maybe it's just me. I take out the cookie from my mouth and examine it. The same one I usually have. But it's so tasteless today.

" What are you doing in the middle of the hall? Move it!" My brother gives me a push.

I turn to look at him. He's giving me that teasing smirk again. It doesn't have the same effect. I walk into my room.

" Serena?" He is nerved my lack of response.

I continue walking.

I pass by the trash can, and drop my cookie in. I swallow some saliva, to get that dry taste out.

The sun's rays reflect off my mirror. The mirror shows the same stringy blonde hair, the same washed out blue eyes, the same pasty skin.

I see the ring on my dresser. The same ring that began everything and ended everything. I take it in my hand. It feels as cold and uninviting as he was. I feel the smoothness with my thumb. I look at it. I toss it at the mirror. It lands in the center. The mirror cracks around it, piece by piece glass shards land on the dresser. The immortal ring falls with the glittering glass. With a slight musical note it hits the dresser.

" SERENA!" My mother runs in. My brother follows. She sweeps me up in her arms. They feel warm, yet so cold.

I bit my lip so hard, I feel droplets on my chin. Looking at my hand on the ground, I see a red drop on my pale skin. There's another one. And another. I bit until I couldn't hold it anymore. Tears stream down my face. Mixing in with the blood from my lips, it seeps into my mouth. I taste the salt. I taste the tangy rawness. I taste my despair.

" He promised." I whisper.

" Oh, Serena." My mother holds me closer, yet she is so far.

" But he left." More tears run. More red droplets fall on my hand. " He promised."

I look on my dresser. In black and white, next to the undying ring and shining glass shards, his name is written: Darien Shields. His mortal name is inscribed on the gravestone that is centered on the black and white picture. On the side am I. As I continue walking. This time without him.

A/N: Depressing eh? This isn't anything like what I usually right, but I had a reason.

This story is dedicated to Lindsay, my Sailor Moon loving friend.
